I have been trying to keep this project under raps for some ime now, but I am afraid that a few to many people have found out what I was doing, so I thought I would post up a some what brief work log.
First up is the engine, 2.6L was just not enough. Yes it is a very high torque engine but I need a V6, so I got one. A stock standard second gen V6 3.0L Injection, with the newer auto gearbox to suit. ( I kept it as an auto because I find them a lot easier to drive)
Next is the brakes set up, I fell that standard brakes are just not good enough, so I have gone with some second gen ABS rotors and pads with the full ABS system.
Suspension is remaining the same as it is fine the way it is.
Next up was some paint and panel, to get the exterior looking just right I have modified a few panels, I have also changed the doors as the first gen doors feel just a little to flimsy... I really like the colour Burgundy, despite every second car having it, so into the respray booth it went!
Next was the interior, I have too keep this more of a secret but lets just say it's going to be awesome when it is complete.
Now the rims, I really don't like the 4 stud pattern, so I changed it with the help of my sister to the 5 stud pattern, now I just have to find some nice wheels.
I would love to get you guys some pics but right now I have to go to my grandmas house as there is a funeral tomorrow.

Gemini

Most likely whole cross member needs to be changed since they are completely different engines.

I would love to but who can be ****ed importing one from NZ ?
I think thats the main reason no one has attempted it.

With patience and perseverance you can stretch the a$#hole of an ant over the mouth of a 44 gallon drum, i think a v6 in a 1st gen is just as painfull

Taking your bottom lip and stretching it over your head till it reaches the back of your neck is more painful. (family guy quote)
Putting a V6 in is quite accomplishable.
However, attaining a v3000 is more so easier, which is why myself and another member, who's name I won't disclose less they want it released, are currently looking at importing a few.
And infact brining a v3000 in, really isn't that much of a choir, all homework done ofcourse.
You simply need to Really want to do either of these things to make it happen.

It would be interesting to study two 2nd Gens side by side, one with the Astron and one with the V6, just to see what the differences are and then translate those differences to a 1st Gen.
Personally I don't think it would be all that hard and I would have a go if I had the money. There seems to be enough space that you wouldn't need to do any oxy cutting to fit the V6. The V3000 1st Gen is narrower than ours so width shouldn't be a problem with ours. Just going by the photos, the V3000 bonnet looks a bit longer, so maybe they added a few more cm in front. However it might be just their ugly grille that gives that impression.
I'd love to see someone do it with one of our 1st Gens. I agree that importing V3000s from NZ is the next best thing. The argument against that is that freight and compliance costs would be large in relation to the value of the vehicle. I suppose that's a moot point when the alternative is spending a few grand to convert a local 1st Gen.
Maybe we could just persuade some of our NZ members to bring V3000's with them when they come over.
Question: What's the difference between ET (the extra-terrestrial) and a New Zealander.
Answer: ET went home.

I have seen a few of them go for something like $500 un registered. If someone buys one for parts only you don't have to worry about getting it complianced and that saves $$$.

Thats what I got, as soon as the second gen comes back from the mechanics all should be good and I can start comparing...

Doesnt look like its that hard tbo. The engine bays looks VERY similar and some similarities in the firewall so they probably have the exact same chassis ?
The v6 pic is from this car.

subframe will be different aswell as gearbox and engine mounts including the one welded to the chassis on passenger side. nevertheless still doable. i would be sourcing a few 2nd gen v6 parts like intake manifold for one though
