I'm always looking for cheap and better ways to mod my car and I'm wondering if this type of modification is legal or not? Sorry for my ignorance, I've been in Australia for only a year (though it might not be an excuse).

My understanding of the law in this area is that even top of the line adjustable coil overs are illegal as they can be adjusted. If they are welded to only ever provide a set (and legal) height, they are ok.

I don't see much difference between buying coilovers and making your own. However suspension and brakes are things that should not be played with lightly. If they fail, the consequences are usually catastrophic.

Perhaps research the ADRs (Australian Design Rules, which determines the legality of cars on the road) for this.

That Z31 rear setup looks quite dodgy ... and thats bad coming from me, as i have been known to do a few dodgy things to my cars ...

mind you - the front setup doesn't seem too bad ... i have never seen these DIY coilover kits before .... got a link to suppliers and catalogue to see what they fit?? might be an interesting conversion for a cheap car ....
