Well, whether you use spray can or gun depends on the finish you want. You'll never get the same finish with a can, but then again, you may not want to.
Me personally, I always use the heatproof silver (by VHT I think) and just go nuts with that. Because it's a heatproof paint, I sand the surface back with high-grain paper (wet rub of course!), dry it off with some acetony ****, then heat it up with a heat gun (not too hot, but so that all the chemicals and **** are gone).
Then apply a liberal first coat (almost to the point of running), and use the heat gun again to really bake it on. Do that a few times and it should look shmick. And being that it's a heatproof paint, it's VERY scratch and peel resistant. Gives a nice brushed silver look too (not a gloss finish).

vynal paint you dont need the clear coat for as its already got it but i used it on mine just to shine it up a bit more.
1, take it all apart and remeber how it goes back together
2, clean it all with oil and grease remover so it gets all the dirt of it
3, put a light spray on wait 10-15mins
4, put a heavy spreay on wait 20mins
5, put another light spary on wait 5-10 mins and do that till you think it looks good than leave it for 1-2hours i left mine for a whole day
6, put a small coat of clear coat on if you want to and leave that to full dry mayb at least 2- 3 to sit
7, start to put back together
8, clean it if you want but make sure you dont use car cleaner that is going to start to take the paint off lol like i did :(
9, take few pics of it and and post on AMC :D
need any help with taking things out just ask me on msn and ill help ya
good luck

Also, be careful with your choice of commercial cleaner -- if you use something that eats paint, it might **** up the finish when you go to paint it.

may not matter but when i prepped mine i used sandpaper, i think it was 1200 grit.
just something so the paint could be applied to a "grippier" surface.
then before i started i used some prep wash stuff, allowed it to dry and got into it.
and you could also go a little better with the paint and head to supercheap and find the color changing stuff they got, comes with 3 pressure packs, undercoat, paint and clear.
thinking back at the time when i got it, it was about $60.
had mine in the car for about 2 years and it still looks as good as the day i applied it.
just an idea for you kick around.
just don't forget to take your time, if you rush it, it is gonna look rushed.
take your time and it will come out beaut.
just as an idea for ya it took me 4 days all up to do.
pics when you are done.

Its easy, ive done consoles in all my cars and friends and gf's ect ect and so on!
Never had a problem with chipping or scratching off.
The magna i currently have is done in the blue the new camrys come in and its been done for over 12 months now, looks like it did the day i did it and you can't scratch it off easily!
I simply pulled out all the pieces, forget the cleaner just spend a little while with 400grit sandpaper making sure to sand them all completely then clean it afterwards, just a damp cloth will do, don't bother with primer, go buy some decent auto paint in a can $25+ for a can!
Lots of light coats till its well covered, leave 24 hours, hit with some heavy coats of clear (be carefull or it will run and do it on a DRY day or it will cloud over).
Should end up very shiny.
I know people like to put on clear coats an hour or so after the colour but it kinda becomes part of the old paint, leave it 24 hours atleast then hit it with the clear... that way if it does chip or scratch at all the clear will come off without taking any colour and you will barely notice it at all!
