Just want to check peoples opinions on this.
Service manual says to change timing belt every 5 years or 100,000Km's. My TJ is 6 years old with 65K on the clock, would you do the belt because 5 years is up or wait out the 100,000Km's.

id probably wait till about 80,000kms
thats about half way between yrs / kms
personally i would do it for the 5 yrs anyway because even if you don't drive the car at all, the rubber is going to degrade in the belt.

The warranty on the belt is 5 years, I would do it now. Much damage if it breaks.

Mate,
thats why (without being a know it all) Mitsubishi put 5 Years OR 100,000 because they know the rubber does Degrade over time so can only guarantee the timing belt life to this time (or KM's worth of wear) before bad things happen.
The damage done by one of these Belts breaking can be very expensive to rectify, so for the Comparitively small cost of replacement its well worth it!...
I got mine done at 105,000 service (not stretchin KM too far, but I was nervous) and got the rear plugs, oil filter, air filter etc etc done by a great Mechanic in Kyneton Victoria (ex Mitsi dealer) and he only charged me $780.00 which I believe is a fair price.

Mate,
reckon the price I paid was good, I ha shopped around many places and he beat the next place by nearly $300 to get the belt and these other items done????
How much would ya expect to pay??

:stoopid: id rather spend hundred than thousand if the belt breaks all of the sudden.. quite messy ive seen it happen on my mates old gutless festiva, on way home from work at midnight. he spent bout 4gs to replace the engine and the rest almost the same price as the car itself:doh: so its up to u wether u wanna wait another 20-40k kms

After about 100,000 the hydraulic belt tensioner can loose pressure and a slack belt can jump teeth and cause major problems even if the belt is still in good condition and dosn't break.
Worth doing a full kit at 100,000 with tensioner, idlers and seals, as idler bearings can start to show signs of wear and you don't want one of them to seize.
If you don't replace the tensioner it may fail at 150,000 and you end up with the same problems as if the belt breaks.

I paid $850 to get ALL the belts changed, as well as the water pump, and seals.

This is not advice but i just had my old ladies '96 KE belt changed as it had just got to 90,000k's. The belt that came out was fine and that is 11 yrs old.
Had it done by a Mitsub mechanic and he said it was ok but glad i had it done.
Also, had all 6 plugs changed for the first time believe it or not. Hehhee. They were fairly stuffed, but car still ran fine, but the difference after i had belt and them changed was huge!! All 6 now irridums.

There's a very good reason why the life of such belts is given in "years OR kilometres". Because when either one is reached, the belt is MUCH more likely to fail, and cannot be presumed to be safe or suitable any longer. As others have said, rubber perishes over time.
The real question is whether you want to spend a few hundred on a new belt now, or a few thousand on a new car later, after your belt goes and takes the engine with it? :badgrin:

Guess its just whether your willing to take the gamble, and for a few hundred $$$, I wouldnt recommend it.

That's the thing, isn't it? Are you prepared to take the risk, and can you afford to take the risk?
Obviously, not every belt will fail just because its exceeded 5 years and/or 100,000km. But it's a helluva lot more likely to than one that is still within specs. Manufacturers will have tested the belts extensively to determine their actual likely lifespan, and then factored in a very healthy margin to account for the many who will go well in excess of the recommended limits. But how far beyond the recommended limits do the real limits lie? And let's not forget the statistical risks of having a belt that will go well before it should have done according to the test results...
