View Full Version : Lukey rear mufflers - how noisy is the LR2779?
I recently had a Lukey rear muffler installed on my TJ wagon.
http://martybugs.net/temp/IMG_4132_600.jpg
As seen in the photo, this muffler is a lot smaller than the factory rear muffler.
I'm not sure which muffler it is - I think the label says LMC17610 or something...it's rather difficult to read, as the exhaust guys painted over the sticker.
It's definitely noiser than the factory rear muffler, and I love it when driving around town - it has a nice burble, and really growls at WOT.
However, at highway/freeway speeds, it drones a bit (particularly at ~2000rpm), and gets annoying.
I'm looking at replacing it with something that will be a bit quieter, without a resonant drone, but yet still provides a better sound than the factory rear muffler.
I've done a lot of searching through the forums, and the Lukey LR2779 seems to be the most popular, with people saying it's the equivalent of the VRX rear muffler, is reasonably quiet, but yet provides a nice growl at WOT.
From what I've read, the LR2779 is virtually the same size as the factory rear muffler.
Just how loud is the Lukey LR2779?
Are there any resonant frequencies with the LR2779?
Cheers,
Martin.
PS. I'll be listing my existing Lukey muffler in the for sale forums as soon as I get a new one installed.

Do it you wont regret it :)
I have it on my 3.5 auto and its sweet.
Deeper note at idle but not loud or intrusive and deffinately doesnt drone!
it was actually designed specifically for the Magna if you look at the lukey site ;)

I have a LR2779 and its been good to me. Had it on my TE and transferred to my KL. Not much drone with extractors, 2.5" all the way with one resonator and a high flow cat. Quite a lot of rumble but not much in the way of drone.

yer i got one on my th 3.5.... no drone, but mine doesnt seem to sound like many others on this forum with the same muffler... that said i have nothing by the way of resonators or other mufflers.... its got a nice burble when taking off at normal speeds but open her up and she screams like a banshee.... heaps of people have said it sounds like a rally car, i dunno, not to sure what they sound like, but yeh, i might be changing it soon to something quieter and deeper

whats this like on a 2nd gen and roughly whats it worth?
Thanks for the feedback.
I'll have a chat to my local exhaust guy about getting a LR2779 installed.
Anyone want the 6-week-old Lukey muffler that's currently on my car? ;-)
Cheers,
Martin.

also make sure to ask for auto ppl with the muffler...manual ppl dont have to worry about it droning below 2k rpm, as they may not often sit at those low revs, but i know my 5spd tippy box loves to sit below 2k rpm wen cruising, and would be bloody annoying if the exhaust was droning away!
so yeah, best to specify as most of the above replies are manual (i think!)
*Edit* sorry, theyre all autos :bowrofl: oops

The LR2779 will still drone a little bit at ~2000 rpm, but it's not annoying (to me anyway lol, i love it). I can't say if it's more or less because i've never heard your muffler.

The fact that the LR2779 is a lot bigger than the Lukey muffler I currently have on my car makes me think it should be a bit quieter.
When cruising at ~70-80km/h, small throttle openings cause quite a bit of drone with my current muffler, and cruising at ~110km/h is a little noisy too.
Maybe I need to turn up to one of the Thursday night socials, and have a listen to someone's car that has an LR2779 installed...
Cheers,
Martin.

Mate I can give you the back-to-back comparison. Six weeks ago I had the stock exhaust on my TF Sports. Changed that to sport system with LR2779 capping it off. No droning anywhere but really very quiet for a sports muffler. Last week got fedup with it and went Redback. Lordy what a difference. Nice fat burble at startup and idle. Then at about 3,500 it starts to make that classic V6 loud gravelly gargle which morphs into a full on banshee wail at about 4,500 all the way to redline. But tread easy on the throttle and it's not intrusive, and no droning anywhere. My exhaust dude says droning is tuned out by lengthening the resonator anyway and has nothing to do with the muffler per se.

i had one of these on my last TH magna. sounded sweet. i had extractors, 2.5" cat back and had the centre muffler cut out, just had the tiny resonator just before the rear axle. no drone, and a nice bark to it. at the moment on my current TH i have a 2.5" system with all middle muffler and a cannon on the back (i didn't do it) and i am going to change it to what i had on my last one.
