Just wondering how can you find out if the timing belt has been changed?
bought the car at 116k few month ago...and doing a 120k service now. Its had a 90k service with mitsubishi, and a 100-105k service with some local mechanic by previous owner.
just wondering if theres anyway i can find any signs that its been changed at 1 of the 2 services, could call them, but what are the likelihood of the shops having records?
yea im curious too, bought me magna with nearly 300k on the clock and im really keen to know if it might need changing in case i do damage when it breaks, any easy way to diagnose if its wearing?

should be a sticker inside the engine bay with km changed
if not
can you take off the plastic inspection cover (timing belt cover )
without too much trouble
inspect it for rips cracks missing teeth wear perishing around the edges of the belt and teeth

the other way is remove the top cover and try to find the writing on the belt. if writing looks clean and easy to read its prob been done.

yeah when i sold my tf, i gave the the guy the service recipt on blets and everything as well as courtesy...but i only got a logbook with service records to 105k (a few stamps) with my current TJ ..nothing else
it is a 02 model, not even 5 yrs old yet
At 300k is'nt it recon time.
engine drives like a dream, doesnt blow smoke, and still pulls like hell :)
nearly all of its life was spent driving from albany to perth and back (700km highway trips), so its had a very easy life, i was discussing with someone the possibility of it already being rebuilt but we had no clue

You could try to get the owners manual from previous owner. I bought my TR with 160,000 km on the clock. The owners manual was stamped by the dealer from new up to the 130,000 km service. I asked the dealer about the timing belt. They told me that if the book was stamped by a Mitsubishi dealer at the 100,000 km service, then it was definitely done. The dealer should also have records. In my case was confirmed on both counts, good enough for me.
Now at nearly 200,000 km, just had mine done again. Much peace of mind....
If you can't confirm this way, look for leaks around the timing cover and seals. My mechanic tells me they often start leaking before the belt is due. If leaking, the belt is probably getting close.
If-when you do get it done, best to get the full kit including seals, then forget it for another 100,000 km. Expect to spend around $700-$800
while everyone is on the topic of services....my car needs its 150km service so i rang my local mitsu dealer and they said $180. now i thought that id have to pay alot more then that for 150km service. b4 anyone asks i did say its for a 150km service. just after some feedback on prices. also is there anything i should ask to be changed over while its there getting done.
cheers guys
