I've been looking at Magnas for my first car for ages now... my parents have a stock 2001 TJ Advance which im learning in, and i love it. Ill hopefully be getting my licence by june (all the vicroads places are booked out for ages), so im beginning to look at cars more seriously...

2001 TJ Sports for $5250 which is cheap as ****, low kms, power windows (which i must have :P) and an aftermarket headunit (less for me to spend when i want to put in my stereo). Judging by the photos it looks in immaculate condition. I'm going to talk to my parents and see if they'll take me out to look at it and if i like it, ill get an RACV guy to look at it so see if its mechanically sound. Then hopefully buy it! :D

The only thing i dont like is the NSW number plates, haha. lol
What do you guys think?

What you guys have said is exactly what i said to my parents... but i cant convince them, especially my mum. Im paying for it with my money, but of course i want to get my parents 'permission' or moreso just approval to buy it...

Its mainly getting approval from my mum. She keeps hammering a point that I dont really "need" my own car right now, and that i could just use their car when its available. Then she argues that ill then have more time to save, and when i do really need a car ill be able to buy something better. The point i retaliate with is that even if i did wait and save a bit more money, THIS is the type of car i would want to buy anyway!! Its just that this happens to be way cheaper than usual.

My mates bought STOCK vs commodores with 180,000+kms for more than this! I need something to convince them to at least take me to look at the car. But right now they dont seem to be taking me seriously at all.

Looks like a good car get it checked have a look at the service book and see if the timing belt has been replaced yet.

by the km's it has done, looks like it hasn't been driven much.

I see where your mum is coming from she is just looking after you.
Don't be in a rush in buying just because it is cheap means it is good deal i've have made mistakes like that.

If you are really keen on this car keep nagging her :P

Yeah, my mum seems to think that i just popped onto the internet once and found something and want to impulse buy... what she doesnt realise is that ive been looking at least once a week for the past 6 months.

if there is 1 thing i can tell you dont buy on impulse ive been stung

lol i wanted a magna but there was only one up for grabs in CT i shoulda waited and got 1 in tville

rhaz
06-04-2007, 04:22 PM
Yup, i know this isnt an impulse buy because i've been looking for so long. The only problem is, with the stupidly good value of this, if im not quick about it itll get sold really fast... also, i have uni off next week so its a perfect time to go look. Argh! >_<

yep got stung with my impulse buy...magna needed a new fuel tank and now it needs something done to the handbrake...

...but i still love it! the only V6 manual TE i found in the last 6 months that wasnt ridiculously overpriced, and with all the visual mods id have done to it myself...overtaking in fourth...could never do that in my old car! :D

at the end of the day, if its your own money its your own business. my parents were set against me buying a new car when my old one (subaru vortex XT turbo) was still running beautifully and never let me down, but i wanted a change and i wanted a manual, V6 Aussie sedan. at the end of the day it was my decision, as it should be yours. even if you bought it you could easily sell it tomorrow for $7k. just think about that.

My mum sounds exactly like yours, Cept yours is more hell bent on you not getting a car, mines more hell bent on not letting me mod it.

If you have another means of transportation available to get this car (i.e. dad, uncle, etc) get it, try and not let an opportunity pass you away!

Sounds like too much of a good deal to not be had just becuase of ya nagging mum.....
have you rung this guy up whos selling it asking if he still has it?

check it out, but get it checked out... could have some serious problems, ie dodgy repairs, or was in a major accident... if it passes (and racv should do a decent check...i know nrma even tests the windscreen wipers!) then snap it up quick smart... give it 1 week and it will be gone.

cars that cheap make me suspicious of the selling reason. I looked at a below average price TL last year($10k with 35000km), the owner told me he was selling so cheap because he was getting divorced (maybe true). At the time average price was 13 to 15K. A police friend of mine ran an accident report on the number plate and VIN and found it had been in a serious crash only 2 months earlier. After I learnt of the crash went back for another look and quized the guy out some more, he admitted to a minor reversing bingle which saw the rear bar replaced. On further inspection I found Insurance repair sticker under carpet in boot, spray edges on rear 1/4s, over spray on door handle rubbers, over spray on door rubbers, boot lid was slightly diff colour, 2 door and rear windows were'nt genuine mitsi, both driver side doors dropped when opened. When I asked him about this he went all quiet and couldnt give me an answer. He was the first registered owner of the car becaused i checked up with mitsi dealer in the log book. Mechanicaly it drove fine, sounded fine but for how long?? RAC checks are good but I think they only check for mechanical probs and defect items, not body or structual probs. Even with a RAC check or similar be sure your happy with the car, look for hidden or covered up probs especialy with buying private as theres no come back. Hope I have'nt turned you off your new found bargain. check it out thoughrly.

examples of what an RRMA inspection found wen i was looking at buying a soarer...

Radiator Drop tank - cracked, coolant leakage
RH screen washer - inoperative
RH headlight - displays water entry
Timing case - displays coolant seepage
Rear differential housing - displays oil seepage/residue

comments:
Previous paint repairs consistent with complete panel respray
Paint panel repair finish of varying standards

just dont ask why i didnt buy it :P lol appeared very nice, few things seller mentioned, but wen i received the whole report i was just like nah, walk away :)

Hi, just looking at the pictures of that extremely cheap pewter TJ Sports, a couple of things come to mind that aren't exactly 'correct' (thus indicating panel replacement) ie. accident :

1. The "3.5" sticker on the front guard seems to be slightly forward (I think)
2. The front numberplate is sitting a bit high (I don't recall my previous TJ looking like this)
3. The spoiler looks quite large --> Is it a VRX spoiler? If I remember correctly, the TJ Sports had a smaller, but similar style, spoiler than the TJ VRX.

Please don't quote me on the above 3 items as I can't be 100% sure just from looking at the small photos, but if all the above are correct, it would indicate that the front right guard, front bumper, and bootlid (and possibly more panels) have been replaced due to an accident.

But for that price - and maybe even cheaper with negotiation - might this just be worth it?

M8 go put a deposit on it NOW and tell them it subject to an RACV test. Deals like this don't last much more than a couple of days.

1: Get it checked out.
2: Ignore ya Mom.
3: If you miss this one for whatever reason, it's been in accident or is sold... start demanding to use your parents car at every opportunity. If they say No ... but ya Mum said you could use their car whenever it's available ... it's 10.00pm they don't need the car. If ya mum wants to be a biatch to control her little boy ... give it back 100%.

DO REVS CHECK!!!!

Something stupid I didn't do and my magna was cheap as, turned out it was a repairable write-off. Just be careful especially since it's come from NSW....

3.5L sticker appears to be too far right, and is the wrong one. (that looks like the thick chunky sticker, it should be a badge)
and yes thats a VRX spoiler, I believe its been hit from the rear and been resprayed (Hence the slight abnormalities)

Revs check provides you with all the details of whether its been in an accident (Insurance will have to notify VIC-Roads/Appropriate Roads Government Division) and will give you insite if its been stolen or what not.

Also when doing it, try and find the chassy number as well as the VIN and make sure they match.

READ THIS BEFORE YOU PUT DEPOSIT!!!

The vehicle in the background is also NSW registered.

Victoria has a law where a vehicle is delcared a repairable write-off, the VIN is stampped out and ingraved (Still readable but is stamped with little dots (more info here http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Registration/HowToRegisterOrTransfer/RegistrationRequirements/WrittenOffVehicleRegistration.htm)

In NSW, they do not have this law, and you can not use victorian methods to check this.

Just please do a Revs Check :) You don't want a lemon for the first car

Frankly man that just seems too good to be true. It looks great but the details raise questions. People love money and will sell anything at the max price to get it. The fact this guy wants only $5000 would turn me off. Its probably got a problem that he's dressed up enough to pass a small inspection. Don't max out your cash, aim lower and try to have sumthing left over for things like insurance, rego and a sick pair of 19"s.

I'd keep looking, try for a TH with a 3.5 in it. That'll sh*t all over your mates VS commodores with their ancient 12 valve, pushrod engines. Or try for a KE/KF Verada. When I was gettin my TF all I wanted was speed but now I'd kill for leather, pwr windows, electric seats and climate control. But yea man I seriously wouldn't go that one.

I've used google image and havent found any TJ sports magna's with the VRX spoiler, only the VRX TJ magna had that spoiler from what I've found. That spoiler has been put on after!

Don't want to sound pedantic but always make the wording "subject to your approval of the results of an RACV test"

Or words to that effect.
Just a little bit more insurance

SCAM.

No one in their right mind would sell a car for less than HALF of its value. I'm sure this is one of those scams where they feed you some bull**** story about needing a deposit first, then you'll never se the money again.
