View Full Version : CAI or something similar

Hi guys... was just talking to the insurance company about CAI and they say I am not allowed anything above the stock CAI. so i was wondering if anyone knew a way to modify the stock CAI to give some gains (no matter how minor they may be) and a more aggressive engine sound which typically comes with a CAI... without changing the appearance so much that it no longer looks like a stock system? Basically I am trying to get a better CAI into my car without alerting the fun police down at RACQ. Failing this... is there any other ways to make the engine sound more aggressive? with or without gains?
Thanks
Matt

i say go for the k&n panel filter, looks oem and replaces your existing air filter, then go for barry's fuel rail kit

or even this http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37867&highlight=cai
this is how it looks when you lift the bonnet.
bit more induction noise would be to close off the intake resonators or hi flow your throttle body (even less detectable) with the above suggested panel filter.

or change insurance companies. When I swapped to Shannons I was asked why I HADN'T changed the induction system. Wow. Oh, and saved 600 on the premium (and that is for a 46 year old on a TF Sports with accidents ever).
flare the mouth on the existing CAI, give you a nice chunky increase in air flow if you do it right i would expect :)

has anyone ever done the maths to see how much more air a 90mm 'pipe' cai suck in over the original. the hole in the front of the original intack at the fron of the bonnet is pretty long.
I wonder how much difference there really is.

Ok I went and quickly measured my TL's standard intake
approx 300mm long x 15mm high = 45mm2
90mm pipe
3.1412x45mm squared = 69mm2
does that maths seem right?
if it is then the 90mm pipe type of CAI must make a difference

how do you fit the 90mm pipe, i tried and couldnt
off your measurements, standard = 4500mm sq
90mm pipe = 6358.5mm sq
interesting too.. as my standard intake is about 20mm high.. very very small opening <_<

Yeah, I would say change insurer. And by the way, TL's sound sweet as running straight AFM's :D

i have a stupid 2nd air intake into the factory snorkel...
and honestly it does nothing at all, if anything its worse than the stock intake lol
i think the std intake with an enlarged mouth is much better, i trimmed the opening to make it larger, but it also needs to be a bit higher.... time to get the heat gun out

Do you mean like the one that was mentioned earlier in this thread? A pipe going from under the front bar up to underneith the standard snorkel?

yep thats it!!
since i have fitted this the only thing i have noticed is that my k&n pannel filter gets dirtier quicker!
and it's not that unusual that it gets dirty in a certain section not the whole filter evenly... due to the entry design of the airbox

:O but i was just about to do this! why burst my buble for lol! its just about te only thing i can do because for insurance reasons i need my intake "looking" stock. So i was just gonna do that and put in a K&N Panel filter... oh and remove that plastic bit ontop of the grill and cut teh top layer of the standard snorkel back a bit to widen it.

FFS, just put it on and don't tell ur insurance dude!! lol lol
Whats gonna happen if all four wheels suddenly fall off and you slam into a school bus full of disabled 3 year olds, whats your insurance gonna say???.... "Damn that CAI was SOOOO modified it must of caused the accident!!" lol
Seriouly, go ahead and wack on a POD and/or some extreme CAI, if something does go wrong remove it before the insurance inspects the car.

Are you gonna pay for the repair if they do ?? :P Not to mention payouts to all the traumatized disabled kids :O
Interesting point tho. If I do get in an accident... how long after do they check you vehicle?

read the link in my first post....modified VN commodore intake.
I cant see how making the factory snorkel mouth larger would benefit as the bonnet closes on top of it...you could also try and push down the plastic "sight shield" around the bonnet lock. I screwed it to the vertical lock support. it carries more air thru the grill into the snorkel. works better on non tj models tho.

u want to stay stock all u got to do is cut out some of the rubber seal on the bonnet just in front of the snorkel that way u'll get more air enterin the snorkel. with this i dont think ur insurance would say a rubber seal cause the run over a bus accidentlol

Yeah and in some cases "Toll Bar" accidents can be prevented by removing those damn "Performance Padels"
Not that I'm targeting anyone in particular......... lol

My TJ did not come with a front bonnet seal. I was told at Mits it was deleted after TH. The other front bonnet seal goes around the intake...or is that the one you meant?

i think im gonna just take the risk a connect a hose direct to the filter box. but any idea where i can get the materials necessary? they didnt have them at bunnings... the guy there suggested clark rubber?

if ya gonna take away the snorkel, maybe do similar to mine(see link) but instead of adding to the snorkel, get a throttle body to filter housing hose and block off resonator holes and attach. Or you can get 100mm piping from elsewhere(member i think do a search)you can pick it all up at the wreckers.

yeah im a bit too nooby to understand what your saying so im just gonna assume i can take off the snorkel and whack on some piping with it leading down to under the front bar somewhere... does that sound reasonable ?? lol :P 100 mm piping u said? any idead where i can get that? like from a budget store of some type? is it really PVC pipe? cause i thought pvc was hard.

EZ boy can still get the piping though. See if he looks through this thread. Otherwise there was a place called purple pig (http://www.purplepig.com.au/) or try places that sell large woodworking machinery as they provide ducting for sucking up the dust.
These places will be more expensive than autobarn as it is higher quality reinforced spiral wound duct.

i went to autobarn today and got some piping but all they had was 80mm... when i got home i realised that the entrace to the filter box if oval and it is significatly larger. How am i suppose to attach it to teh box? I Have been to autobarn, supercheap and repco and none of them have a solution. :(

go to bunnings and buy one of those 80mm-90mm to 100mm black rubber adaptor. the adaptors are flexible. they are about 10 bucks at bunnings, dats where i got mine from
