hey guys, just a quick one... i replaced my battery on tuesday as mine was pretty shagged, nothing special, we had a new ford come into our work and in the fit out it includes a new deep cycle battery, and being brand spanking new i thought id have to one we took out, like i said nothing special 550cca.... 85amp hours or something like that, apart from kicking over much better now, the car seems to pull alot harder off the mark, and when overtaking, if im a bit silly and floor it so the driver im overtaking can see my annoyance at their driving lol it really picks up and flies, so my question is, would the battery have anything to do with this? i didnt think it would, just seems like a bit of a coincidence to me, i thought maybe its giving better charge or whatever to the plugs and theyre sparking better or something i dunno lol.... so yeh, discuss :P
cheers,
tom

You probably added an earthing kit and a high-flow throttle body by accident, they are both well known to instantly increase power by noticable amounts.

If you've ever had anything to do with computer building.... a quality power supply with stable output is paramount to best performance. The magna has a computer, ergo, same situation more or less. I've heard it recommended that on modern cars, the battery should be changed every 2 years.

I changed over from a standard 550 amp battery to a Optima Yellow dry cell 700+ amps and didn't feel a scrap of difference. Only thing i noticed is that it turned over quicker and my headlights don't dim whilst idling.

Another theory could be that when you disconnected the battery, the transmission computer reset. If you've driven like a granny lately ( before the new battery) and now are flooring it, the car will shift quicker because it thinks you're a hoon now.

what if the spark plugs were lagging due to battery not providing a good steady volt
i know in my car when i have stero pumping, the car fill a tad sluggish of the mark ( i've got a integra) so i don't know if its the same case for a magna

Very subtle man.

Ditto, but only if they are red cables! :doubt:
Battery only provides starting power, from there on the alternator provides the power - unless something is wrong.

You'll wanna be careful there, I'm pretty sure most alternators don't provide the sort of power that a battery does. The alternator is really just a big battery charger, built purposely for a big battery. As for the whole difference in performance, its probably the placebo effect coupled with a ECU reset.
Slightly off topic, I replaced my spark plugs on the weekend and now my car seems more powerful, though I highly doubt that they made much difference (I have a few theories though)

Won't it hold the gears longer, rather than moving through them quicker?

If it starts faster, it goes faster :bowrofl: :bowrofl:

I meant shift down (by my flooring it remark). It will shift down instantly instead of hesitating abit if he's usually easy on the throttle.

just like that clown that slipped and accidentally turbo'd his charade?... oh, riiightt :doubt:
probably something to do with the ecu reseting, probaby a placebo effect to, oh well, the car runs better now so im happy with that :)

you could probably notice the diff if your old battery was on its way out. remember an old battery with stuffed cells won't take a charge like a new one (try measuring the voltage at the battery while car is running with an old battery vs a new one) so it probably won't provide the oomph that the coil needs in the time available to make a nice big spark.
probably a combination of better spark etc plus the ecu reset.

Yep Im going for ecu reset as well. The car hasn't learnt bad maps from an oxygen sensor yet - fuel trim can be a bitch.
I had this on another car which 'lost' the performance again - disconnected the 02 sensor and reset the ECU, it stayed that time. Replaced O2 sensor and had far better performance and economy. Something to keep in mind.
