Just got a nasty bill, $417 for two new front rotors for an AWD. They are double the normal price. The guys said I had 'hot spots' (3), at 12, 3 and 6 o'clock on the disc, and that they wouldn't machine out, resulting in vibration on braking. True enough, I've noticed that. Should I have gone through with it? I've never heard of this in my life, nor has anyone I know. It was a hire car before I bought it (low km though ~25k), so it would have had a hard life.

Are you sure the bill didn't include new pads? Sounds about right for disks and pads. Unless someone had it on the track .... hire car - possible.... I seriously doubt its hot spots - more likely given the 12/3/6 thing its badly tightenend nuts - a chronic problem with badly serviced magnas and a sure fire way to warp the disks. Correct torque on the mags is 90-100 NM, which is the old 75lbs per foot - not very tight really.
seems pretty excessive for just rotors. DBA slotted rotors are around $120each.

seems about right.
id say 2hours labour at $80ph = $160
$420-160 = $260 / 2 = $130perside
about right if he did pads aswell

I had hot spots on my KH.
You could actually see them. They look like blue/purple spots on the disc.
Usually caused by crappy pads i.e. factory pads after you give them a hard time and boil the discs.
Wont happen with good pads.
Yeah, AWD discs are a fair bit more expensive than FWD.

yeah I fried mine last year (sunny coast cruise) At 20 or 30 km/h with the brakes slightly depressed you can feel the hot spots pass under the pads. Which is a good excuse for me to get dba rotors once i get my new rims:badgrin:

Cheers everyone. I think the costs were normal enough (they changed the pads, but I supplied the pads, new mitsubishi pads). Midas Haberfield did it, they are a good bunch. I've had recomendations of them from my neighbours, and people on here

Interesting! I've done two big trips under heavy load. ~8000km in a month around Tassie with three heffers in the car and camping gear (back was heavily weighed down). When I moved from Adelaide, the car was very heavily loaded. And I came down Macquarie pass, then up bulli pass. Oops! You could see the marks on the discs. They've been there for ages, and they don't wear off. I;ve done 80K km, so I should expect some wear and tear
The discs seems thicker than the old one. Can't really be the case though. Is this just an issue with Ralliart/AWD front brakes, or all magnas?
