View Full Version : Your Best Economy in 380

Today I reached a record (for me) 611 kilometres on 1 tank (91 octane); final average of 9.8L/100km. Most of my driving is on motorways (non peak hour).
This tank lasted me 2 weeks (but both weeks were reduced from Easter long weekend, plus I only do work-driving; religating weekend kms for my wife's VS Holden).
Lately I have been very impressed with the still-improving (for my almost 20,000km) economy of the 380, and am wondering what is the best/furthest distance anyone else has reached in their's.

I have been very concerned about the fuel economy in the 380, I have only got roughly 6,000 k's on the clock and atm around town I get a crappy 13.9/100k's. And that is when I am driving like a grandma!!!! I am beginning to think there may be something wrong with it.
I thought that the fuel economy would be a lot better than what it is. Any thoughts on this?
I do pray that it improves as the k's clock up and **** loosens up a bit.:doubt:

Hey,
I would have thought anywhere from 11 to 16L per 100km would be considered fairly good for a large six cylinder family car in various city driving????
My brothers BA Falcon rarely shows much below 15L per 100 around town, and my mates new VE Commodore is much the same.
Even my sister's new small 2 litre manual hatchback uses around 9-11L in city driving!!!
In saying that sure it will improve some as you put a few more k's on it, as it is very new still.
Have you had a highway run in it yet? If so what's it getting when cruising?
I also noticed that like my TJ Magna they seem much happier on 98 Premium Octane fuel such as BP Ultimate or Shell V power with better economy and smoother performance (very much worth the extra pump price from what I have seen, not to mention keeping your engine cleaner in the long run!!)
What were you driving previous to the 380? Wasn't a Toyota Pirius was it??? If so you may be a little disappointed with fuel consumption in a bigger car:), but think of the extra room, power, safety, and effortless smooth driving.....

Nah not a Prius - its been a very long time since I had a 6 cyl and there fore wasnt sure whether I was getn good fuel economy or not - I drove a 91 TP first gen (fuel inject) before the 380. It was good on the fuel, but I also think the wagon had a bigger fuel tank something in the vicinity of 72 litres so a tank of fuel would go further in that than in the 380 which has around a 60 (0dd) litre tank.
I am glad to hear that its considered good. its been on a few highway runs and averages the 10/11L per 100ks that the sticker said it would get. I know I can be a bit of a lead foot at times and that it isnt good for the fuel economy and hence the reason for driving like a grannie to see if that improved it at all- when I drive normally I average about 14.5L/100k. So there is a slight difference.
Well I am a bit happier now with it   tar

Best average consumption I got was 8.4 ltrs per 100 kms but purely highway travel. That was with 3 adults and a teenager with a boot load of luggage and the aircon on.
Engine has over 30,000 on the clock.

How large is the 380 fuel tank btw?
I didnt think its economy would have shown much improvement.

Our 380 is showing an average of 11.9l/100km after 13,000km. This is with mainly mixed cycle driving and regular towing of a 500 kilo dead weight(jetski), so i dont think the economy is too bad considering.

if you do short trips, no matter how you drive the car you will get average fuel economy. when you start the engine it runs very rich and uses a mountain of fuel, more so when its cold.

Yes for sure your economy will improve. At 6,000km your 380 is still a baby! Mine was horrible then too - just be patient. And city driving will never be as good as highway stuff. My 380 only does work driving (ie no weekend stuff) on Sydney's M7 & M4 motorways (with cruise set to 100) at 5am & 2pm everyday, during which there is not much traffic.
And later, you can try a higher octane; that does improve economy too - BUT not too early in car's life (I learnt about that and even started a thread on 100 octane fuel, etc).
You mentioned not having a big 6cyl for long time. Its all relative of course, but I had 2 V8s; one being an old VL that gave me about 18-19L/100KM and needed Optimax every 3 days! So I'm very happy with 380's economy and power! And I'm sure you will too, later.

Well I think there is nothing to complain for the amount of new electronics on the car and for it size. The fuel economy is not bad.

Just hit 16k and completed the 15k service (Late). I live on the northern beaches in Sydney and work in Nth Sydney. I was driving to work via the Spit Bridge to start with but was only getting 330-350 to the tank. I changed to driving a 2km longer route through Chatswood and saw the fuel economy rise to 450 per tank. The driving via the longer route has less stop/start and travels at a better pace to the shorter Spit route. I give this as an example of how different traffic speeds can severely affect the consumption. I have driven on freeways between Sydney and Newcastle/Hunter Valley on a number of occasions and got 750km from a tank. Having driven Verada's for the previous 15 years I don't see the fuel consumption of the 380 to be much different. Of course it helps if the company is paying the fuel.

Yeah, I think the size and weight of the 380 is something a lot of people dont realise. Its heavier than my old VX SS

When I was on Holidays in South Aus, I had a 380 for a hire car... I drove from Adelaide to Moonta (170k's approx) via the Prt Wakefield rd (pretty dead flat road surface)... average speed of 113, with average of 8.1, very similar to my current magna. Didnt really do too much city driving, but being the big brother of the 3.5ltr I would say it would consume a fair bit more then h/way

Hi guys,
just wondering, is it worth getting Mitsubishi to tune the car to only take premimum unleaded (95 and above)
Will this help perforamnce and fuel economy or is it a bad idea ?
thanks

I wouldnt even bother with the tuning side of it, extra cash that really wont make a difference... personally I think, even if they did say they tuned it, I really think they would be pulling ya leg...
Anyways, I would just start using premo/ultimate/v-power etc etc, cleaner fuel, your engine will love it especially in the long run, I know the extra bucks per litre are there but seriously its worth the extra. Performance you wont notice straight away, you'll prob notice response is a little better, overtaking etc etc... Also the same with economy, you will notice this to improve down the track

Yeah, I think the extra $ are worth it. I did notice the difference in my 2001 Magna (which got traded in for the soon to arrive 380), and I assume the new one will have a similar if not better boost.
cheers

One thing I havent yet done is driven a 380 with premo, I would imagine the hire places would be povo and use reg fuel... I drove the auto n was quite surprised how quiet yet quick it was... My TH hasnt had a drop of reg fuel thru it, I had the injectors cleaned for the first time in 8 yrs only last month, the guy who did em told me "I could of given straight back to you with out even cleaning em, you wouldnt of known, cos they were so clean"... He said I must be rich lol from using the 'good' fuel, I said nah just a great work fuel card :-o

Mitsubishi have engineered the 380 to run on both 91RON and 95RON. Advertised performance and power figures (0-100 in 7.6secs, 175kW/343Nm etc) are based on using 91RON. Using premium unleaded will improve both these figures to a degree, and should also somewhat improve economy.

Yeah, no need for any mods to run higher octane, just dump it in.
I recently ran a tank of VP Racing (100 octane). Power is felt in mid+top range with more responsive acceleration (low-range as per normal). And economy is better too. Not cheap though, at 15c litre above regular stuff.

The 380's fuel tank is 65 litres.
From Mitsubishi:
380's have a 67 litre tank.
3rd Generations have a 71 litre (awd 69 litre)
2nd Generations have a 64 litre

Just finished a tank for mixed city and highway driving; 9.8l /100km. Air con was on for half the time and car has now done 20K. Economy is steadily improving.
