Hi guys, just wondering how much a gearbox for a second gen v6 would cost as I'm in need to replace mine because the whole box is shattered and won't select any gears or anything.
I only have around $1200 to spend on this gearbox replacement (not including labour of course).
A rebuilt one would cost me around $2200. And I might as well buy a whole second gen v6 magna and pull the box out of it.
If anyone has any idea, please let me know!
Much appreciated.

I paid $600 for mine, second hand with 100k. I'd say that'd be about average, although several places quoted me upwards of a grand for an average condition box.

self service wreckers generall have heaps of them, most will offer 30 day warranty for around 10% of purchase cost.
Be sure you also get the right one, check which TCU you have ie 2 or 3 plug and make sure the doner vehicle had same

Does $2200 sound correct for a rebuilt for the V6 transmission? Just getting a bit sus on the mechanic :(

That'd be pretty much spot on. Do you just want to get it rebuilt, or strengthened?
The F4A33 was only designed to take 200-220hp. Due to the inherent weaknesses, much more than that and it'll go bang.
There are guys in the states who've modified these boxes to handle 700 ponies.

Umm...the modified 3000gts in the states with the F4a33 are putting out more than 220hp with no problems...and they dont even have tranny coolers....
Im pretty sure theres also at least one with a twin turbo conversion with no mods to the trans other than an added cooler, a shift kit and an lsd..

It's not the cooling that matters so much as the surface area of the clutch packs. A bigger surface area will handle more power. One additional clutch and plate in the front clutch of the F4A33 will handle up to 25% more power.
try not goin to a mechanic. and go to an actual gearbox place. should work out cheaper

Much appreciate the help boys but all that technical bable is confusing me http://www.clubvr4.com/forum/images/smilies/dizzy2.gif
I settled for a rebuild for $1500! :)
I called a few places up and they had second hand boxes for $450 in Greenacre. Not bad, but who knows what problems those gearboxes might give me in the future seeing as I drive at least 850km a week and like taking the car on long long road trips hehe so the extra money will keep me peace of mind plus the workshop is strengthening the gearbox to handle extra power. And he'll give me a 5 year warranty!
Does this sound good?
I don't want this happening to me again! GRRRRR
Full got stuck at the lights messaging chuck and mal asking what da hell happened lol
Lucky i got it into a side street out of the public eye. So embarassing

I dont doubt that...Im just saying....you said that the trans will only cope with 200-220hp...I just gave you an example of how it has coped with more than that without strengthening...;)

Sorry if I took it the wrong way mate. Just shows you how much punishment stock parts can withstand
Back the topic at hand, $1500 for a rebuilt and strengthened transaxle is very tidy. Which shop's doing the work?

seems good for the rebuild... can't see them doing much in terms of strengthening as all the processes sound expensive... limited knowledge but
The cheapest would be carburizing (liquid or gas), involves a few steps which i've no idea how much would cost but wouldn't be nothing. Also i don't know what they do from factory.
Nitriding is a bit more involved but could be done, again don't know if they'd do it from the factory.
Ionitriding would be too expensive and so would carbonitriding but these processes could be used too make these boxes handle alot more power.
It'd be good to have someone who knows a bit about transmissions on here.

Oh sweet so $1500 is good aye? Yeah I thought so. Just wanted to check.
I would've been shattered if someone said it was a rip off. Then I would've had to look for a new mechanic hehe
The guy who's doing it he's name is mick he has a workshop in the west. Well known evo specialist and does show cars but works on all mitsus's
He's even worked on bombed out TR and TP magnas haha
Top guy hehe does the job well. He did my suspension for me too. Got me eibach super struts and new springs because my suspension bottomed out a while ago for only $550 including labour (which he put me on tick for a week)
Quiality work
If you have anything to be done i can give you his number he's quite good pricing too and works after hours.
He's respraying half of my car for right now as well as for $800  (the boot, two rear fenders, half the roof, half the rear doors and the whole back bar are in pretty crap condition with no more clear coat and sun damage :()
I've booked him in to do my engine transplant in August.
Even though it's far, it'll be something to look forward to and i know he'll do a good job hehe
Btw, much appreciate all the responses guys.
I love you ALL *HUG*
