View Full Version : Handbrake Squeal at very low speed

Can anyone help with this problem.
I never had any dramas with the handbrake until I fitted my rear ralliart rotors. Now at very low speed I get a noise like a cat's on heat!! Problem is the noise comes and goes as it pleases during a drive. I've had the handbrake properly adjusted but the squealling at low speed is frustrating to say the least.
I'm wondering whether it's glazed on the new brake drum.
Can a light sanding of the handbrake pad stop this?
???

I have the exact same problem, does yours seem to be louder when its cold or raining?
Had the handbrake looked at twice and problem still exists.
Thinking I may just take the wheel off and adjust it myself when I get some time.

Solution.
Don't drive with your handbrake up.

Yep, worse when raining.
I've adjusted mine about 4 times at the rear wheels and then had mechanics adjust too. It's just frustrating.
This revised brakeshoe kit that I've read about in other posts, does anyone know what it's worth from Mitsu? Or are there any aftermarket alternatives?

One notch up and it howls like a banshee. 2 or more notches and it gone. Then when you release it, it'll be good for a while and then the squealling will come back.

I dont know if this will be the same with yours but when i jack it up and the handbrake is on, my rear right wheel still spins.... Which is where i thought the noise was coming from. I took it into to ACT brakes and asked them to fix it and it still makes that terrible noise its so painful! and thats not the only time ive asked for it to be fixed so im taking it to mitsu for its next service and make sure its a priority for em! probaly gonna make some excuse that will cost me thousands tho..

Just a thought but could it be the normal brake pads and when you put the handbake on, it damoens the vibrations in the rotor that are the squeal ?
When it's squealing, does the squeal also go away when you apply the footbrake ?
If it is the handbrake causing the squeal, back it off a fair way at the hub adjustment and if it still squeals then something is out of alignment. There's not a lot in there so check that the metal curve at the bottom of the two handbrake pads is hooked under the little projection on the backing plate - you'll see it when you look at it.
If it's fitted properly, you shouldn't be able to pull that metal part of the brake shoe away from the backing plate.

My handbrake is definently the problem. It even makes the noise when the brake caliper is removed.
The handbrake shoe just slightly rubs on inside of the hub as it(the shoe) is out of round. If you adjust it till it wont touch anymore, it wont engage properly and wheel spins freely.
I'll have to check that on that metal curve you speak of but Last time I looked at it, everthing seemed to be in order.

Yep, the "foot brake" accentuates the disk part of the rotor where as hand brake works more on the drum. But being same part, they prolly "warp" a bit when operated.
Adjusting the handbrake according to service instructions brings the shoes quite close to the drum and then they tend to move around a bit and eventually start to touch the drum. Hence pulling the handbrake lever when driving slowly will "reset" the shoes off the drum a bit. Crrappy system and seems to annoy every Magna owner. I think there was a recall, but dunno if we can fix our older Magnas under it....
Taking it to a "brake specialist" prolly doesn’t do anything but damage to one's wallet.
I avoid using the HB. Bgger.

Something i do that eliminates it...
Pull the handbrake up when parked, put it in reverse, and press accelerator until the back wheels start to slide (locked).
Then drive off... problem fixed.
Honest!

Believe it or not I have sorta tried that. Seems to make mine worse. That's gives me the Banshee Howl too. Although I've never locked the wheels up in reverse.

Guess it's worth to try, eh.

I rip the handbrake up for an instant, rear wheels lock and the noise is gone. I do this at no more than 10kph though

Have you tried reversing the brake shoes ?
If there is abit of warpage it might just provide the clearance you need. You'll need to undo the hub though to get the shoe off. 4 bolts - no big deal. Could also try swapping left and right side shoes.
I used to do the handbrake trick when driving off but it stopped one time when I took the hubs off to put the Ralliart backing plates on. That might be when I noticed that the shoe wasn't seated properly under the backing plate piece. Can't quite remember.

I really don't understand why you're pulling up your parking brake if you're parking. Usually you come to a stop before lifting it up.
Too many hanbrakeies son! If anything when you take the pads for machining get some sandpaper and do the inside of the rotor. It's probably just glazed over due to the heat they develop.

Only solution is Revised brakeshoe kit, I had this issue around 6 mths ago, got the kit from mitsu and got steve (performance auto to install it for me) and since there is peace in my life.
I think it was $140 for the kit, ( not sure)

I hate mitsu's "pound of flesh" attitude to spare parts. $140 is just stoopid!

Just got a quote from mitsubishi.
$230 inc GST for the revised kits!!!
The spare parts guy just told me to go buy some aftermarket kits!! He said they don't tend to sell to many kits.

By pulling the handbrake on lightly as you drive forward, the handbrake shoe is re-centred around the hub and stops the rubbing on the drum that causes the squealing. It doesn't have to be pulled tight enough to slow the vehicle down when you do this.
I'd be interested to know what the difference is in the Mitsu hanbrake upgrade kit if anyone has checked it out.

I think its just a softer compound on the shoe. But that's just from what I've read on this forum.

Well I bought a couple of 'minor' replacement kits for the handbrakes and fitted them on the weekend.
Brand: PBR
Minor Kit: (Contains 1 Banksia Shoe, Replacement retaining clip and screw and three rivets which you don't need unless you're getting the major kit)
Cost: $33 each.
Bottom line...
Noise is gone.
As it turns out one of my retaining clips was broken. no idea how that happened but all is good now.

I got mine through R&E Auto Parts in Melbourne but I'm sure Bursons, Autobahn etc would stock.
Brand was PBR and The part number from memory was PBK124...that's the minor kit. Major kit comes with complete assembly rebuild. that PBK125.. Minor kits are $33 each and you need two.
