Hi All
Im pretty new to these forums and I am a 25 year old female so excuse me if I dont really sound like I know what I am talking about!
My TR has had a few probs lately. At the moment I am finding that with a cold engine in the morning, my TR seems to "stutter" or "chug" when I get to about 50km/h. It feels really rough to drive and it feels as though there is not enough petrol getting thru to accelerate as i struggle to get to 60km/h
After about 5 mins or so (once engine has warmed up) it gets better though. Would a tune up fix her up or is this something more serious, ie a new fuel pump, filter etc? Also, it it dangerous to drive like this? (while i get the money together to get it fixed)
I am at 160k on the clock.
Any advice would be great
Thanks for reading

Would some of that Wynns SpitFire stuff help me out in the meantime? It feels heaps dodgy to drive at the moment. I cant get in anywhere to get her looked until a weeks time :(

It's sounds like it could be a couple of things.
old fuel filter (no getting enough through to the engine)
a block in one of the lines (not to common)
a blocked fuel injector (possible)
old air filter
also maybe electrical
like your distributor, rotor button, coil, leads or spark plugs how old are these? could be contrubuting to it. also it would help if u bought a can of crc contact cleaner and clean all the electrical connections in the engine bay (u'll be amazed how much this can improve the running of your car) paying more attention to the blcak plug coming off the distributor. if there's any dirt /moisture or corrosion it can produce the probs you have mentioned plus more like the car won't even start. that happened to me and my car wouldn't start so i cleaned the dizzy connection and it fired up straight away.
maybe your auto choke is out of whack (u need it to start the car oncold days)
hope the suggestions help:D

Well it is a bit of a prob driving to work at 40km/h an hour for the first 5 mins ... I cant get past 40 until at least 5 mins into my journey. Or I just have to drive round the block for 5 mins and then try and get to 60.
Speaking to some blokes at work, they seem to think it is the fuel pump as the idle has been all over the place too. I got it adjusted a few weeks back and it lasted about 3 days and then dropped again.
Hopefully at least a tune will help but I cant get it in until next Fri :(

Thanks for your advice. The distributor lead (think that is what it was called) was replaced 2 months ago as I was stalling all the time. But not sure if the other stuff was replaced so I will see if I can get it checked out

It is a 1991 TR AUTO
i have exactly the same problems as you. I have cleaned the PCV thoroughly with carb cleaner, and replaced all of the breather pipes. Has made a hell of a difference. I am checking the front rocker cover for contamination tomorrow as part of my ongoing repair process lol. The gearbox is getting a bit funny now so i think i have to get that looked at.
I am still getting hesitation sometimes with accelerating. I am pretty certain it is fuel filter or fuel pump now.

ok now. let me guess when the guys at work tryed to help out buy adjusting the timing without the manual? if they set it by turning the idle screw thats where ur problem is. iether the tps (throttle position sensor) has gone or they put the base idle really out by turning the screws which is a big no no. the tps controls how much idle/base idle (for starting up and cold times)should be i what gear and so forth. to set the idle properly u need a multimeter so u can test the conuality (sp?) between the pins of the tps and then to adjust till there with in the limit. it states in the manual never to turn or play with the base idle adjust screw , which is the first thing most ppl do before they read the manual.
so in summery i think the tps is dead or close or the helpfull mate at work made it worse by trying to help out thinking they where in the right.
my sugestion is get a manual and borrow a multimeter and set the timing properly then take it for a drive and see if that did it, this way thats free. now if thats dosen't do it u cold replace the tps (about $120) or swap ur fuel filter( if it's old can't hurt) , the filter will be 15 -20 bucks but dosen't garrentee it. now if no of that does it try looking at the other things i mentioned:D

thats what i do. in the mornings its so bad for power. instead of 130 hp at the motor it feels like two blind retarded mules trying to hump each other. but after it gets to about 1/3 on the temp guage its great. my parents prado is great from dead cold no difference between cold and warm.

If your car loses a substantial amount of radiator fluid too, check under your oil cap for a milky substance. Mine started doing what yours did and I dismissed it, not a good thing!

It also seems to be quite intermittent - some days it seems fine and others it is terrible. I cant work out what the common cause is though. I am booked in for a service and tune this week so hopefully that will make things a bit better
