View Full Version : Spark plug woes

Just did barry's mods that i recieved in the mail the other day, thought i would check my plugs while i had the inlet off..

well it turned out that 5 were slightly off white, and powdery, indicating a lean out.. but the other one was covered in what i thought was oil, but upon chatting with a few blokes they seem confident that it would have been a build up of fuel, as a result of a sticky injector or something similar. the brownish liquid wiped off the injector very easily, and the annode was shiny clean.

my car does not blow any smoke at all, and i dont know of any oil leaks (and neither does the driveway)

can anyone confirm, or suggest any other reasons for this occurance in the spark plugs? any help greatly appreicated.

oh and while im at it.. different thing: when i had it all back together and idling, i was mucking around with barry's grounding kit which i havent installed yet.. touched the grounding strap from 1 block to the other like it's supposed to do, and it sparked. voltage leak?

Damon

(PS, platinum plugs are bloody expensive!)

(PPS: someone said this would do a very similar job to an ultrasonic injector clean, true or false? (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Ultrasonic-Dental-Denture-Orthodontic-Tattoo-Cleaner-C1_W0QQitemZ110116292270QQihZ001QQcategoryZ490QQrd Z1QQcmdZViewItem))

If u have oil in your spark plugs that mean the seals are gone and the oil is leaking into the spark plugs u need to get it fix ASAP as it can get worse and worse

yea, the thing thats killing that theory is the fact that the car blows NO smoke at all, if oil was getting into the cylinder i'd be pissing out black smoke

Yes thats right. Is your rocket cover leaking any oil

not as far as i can tell.. every spark plug cylinder has a bit of oil around the top, and base of the spark lead, but i presumed that was from the mechanic who fitted them, ro make the easier to take off/on or something.

i might clean one, drivine around for a bit, and see if it gets oily again, if it does, new rocker cover gaskets are an easy as pie fix :)

My KE had oil on all the plugs when I did them about a month ago, just changed em and put it all back together.

Car runs fine, dont blow no smoke, its at ~225,000km, so Im not to worried about it to be honest.

If the blotchy plug was the one closest to the brake booster then your EGR valve my need a clean up.

Hi Damon
If the plug was a Champion, I'd be changing to NGK
Test the plug lead, and if the leads have aged change them as well

Fitting the volt stab normally throws a spark due to it's capacitors charging, but when it occurs by fitting the earth strap, it just shows how inadequate the engine's existing internal earthing really is

Cheers, Barry
