View Full Version : 6th Head Gasket......When do i quit?

As of 20 minutes ago, coming home from work, everything was fine....
I had replaced the starter motor earlier today so just driving the car for once in 2 weeks felt wicked.
I pull up in my driveway and dads taken the garage space.
I call him and ask him to take his car out, so i can put mine in to clean it...
So as i put the car into Reverse i see some smoke at the front of the car....at this moment im thinking...what the hell thats weird....
So i reverse some more and it reveals a MASSIVE oil puddle....I mean at litre....It was huge....The more i reversed the more oil that came out...
I parked my car in the garage and oil was just EVERYWHERE around the back of the engine.
For those who dont know.
1) Got Reco heads Mid October Last year
2) A Few nice members off AMC and I put the heads on, only to reveal water in the oil
3) (2 HG's down) I get both the HG"s replaced by a mechanic...(4 HG's Down)
4) One of them blows, so i get a better mechanic to replace them (which was the front HG, no probs with that one till this day) (5 HG's Down)
5) And today, the 6th one went (that the dodgey first mech did)
All i know is;
Tomorrow The dodgey mechanic will be getting a VERY PISSED off call from one poor 18 year old.
And the Better mechanic will be getting another call, this time to do my rear HG.
I AM F**KING PISSED OFF.
I had to rant.....Ive never felt this pissed off in ages.
Now i dont have a car to use for another few weeks:rant:
One very expensive 2nd gen.... (also now with leather:cool: )

I'd defs be ringing the relevent consumers affairs representatives in your area so you are ready to spray **** mechanic with legalities if he goes haha you can't do ****... ie real knowledge > threats

Too bad mate.
I hate it when you have to spend money on engines/cars only to get the car back the same as it was. ie. no performance or handling improvement etc. :doubt:
Welcome to the Leather club tho

well if you can find me a $3K 3rd gen with a fully habib'd stereo and hundreds of hours poured into it...go right ahead:P
Didnt think i'd need "heavy duty" HG's for everyday applications so didnt even bother asking...

I would have quite 2 HG's ago Tuffy!
Seriously, get all the contact surfaces checked, hell I would get them skimmed and cleaned up in any case. Only needs a TINY ding in the metal to make it blow a HG every time.
best of luck with it.
there was a verada on here for $4300 that'd be alright to have a look at ;)

I think TUFFTR might be put away in a shed for a while...In a few months it might come out Manual with a DOHC, new front bumper, some gauges that work...and a little bodykit.
so anyway!
diamante front $300....takers??

Mate im really hoping so, Its just that its happened so many times before im just presuming its a HG.
There has been an oil leak for a while from the rear of the engine that was pretty bad (i.e. 15 min trip would yeild 7+ drops of oil in one spot) but was not pressure related.
Reigns - Spent all my money on this one:(
Andy - Thanks mate.....same here...

i had a nissan pulsar that loved chewing up bits and pieces. it went through 1 rear main engine seal 2 heads 3 computers 6 CV's 2 dash instrument rebuilds 2 timing belts 1 exhaust 4 brake rotors and full suspension rebuild before i just got annoyed with it and traded it in on a rada.
look into rear main engine seal. i know when mine when it leaked oil lke a mofo. sounds like it's time to find an engine to replace the one you have.
[TUFFTR]
21-04-2007, 11:31 AM
I know its not a rear main because its not coming from there. oil leak was coming from dizzy side of motor, so could of been cam seal, rocker cover gasket etc.
Im sick of this engine full stop.
Lesson to noobs touching engines....They wont be the same when its all back together

Damn, mate, thats the worst. Shoulda got an astron. At least the oil stays in them, if you can live with the timing chain rattle!

Any engine can be just as good once put back together.
If the heads are tested and flat, the block is clean and flat (must be checked) and the cooling system is doing it's job there is no reason for the gasket to blow again unless there is oil on the surface of the quality of the parts is rubbish.
As for the leak, where the leak is it is not poss to be the head gasket, more than likely the cam seal or the rocker cover gasket, which on the rear can be tricky as you can not really see the back when you install them

It definately looks high a high pressure leak to say the least... seeing as how a large quantity 'suddenly' came out.

I know my mech was going to fix the leak this week, well, tad too late now:P
He said it wasnt a "pressurised" leak like the last one (which blew) so he said there was no cause for concern...Will just be loosing a bit of oil..
Its funny....I buy degreaser in bulk now....Actually went through a whole 5L last night just getting the oil off the concrete...
Whos religious here? Tonight, say some prayers for me as i hope its not expensive lol

Time for a new car !
Such a simple line, if only you have a $5,000+ hanging around to get a 3rd Gen yeah? pfft
Its difficult to save whilst your a student, even if your working part-time it is very hard to save, unless your parents are loaded and pay for everything, its cheaper to repair the car then try and save 5K+ for a new one, think before you post.
Tuff, did you ring the mechanic who did the last repairs? what was his response?

No, i'll only ring him up and blast him if its a HG..not worth my time talking to that dope for something like a seal.
If i had a [admin edit] digital camera that would take more then 1 shot before deplecting the batterys, i would of taken some better shots.
i'll keep everyone updated.........

ok well spent the last 10 days fixing this cam seal (with spare time i had etc)
got everything back together and she started first time you beauty...
So take her out for a drive today (first drive in 4+ weeks) for about 15 mins and get to the shop i had to go to.....and there was alot of smoke coming from the LHS brakes....i thought hmm might be normal, burning off left over oil and whatknot...
about 2 mins from home the oil light comes on....i swore pretty loud and went home....cars now making a ticking noise (probably cause of hardly any oil left) and well its parked outside.
so yet again, its blown something, dont know what, all i know is YET AGAIN....there is oil everywhere...
can someone lend me a car that works?

theres your problem there.
obviuosly if your car hasnt been right since you have been tinkering with it its a sign telling you to stop being a mechanic and actually let a mechanic fix it.
working at super cheap dosnt mean you can tinker with motors lil paulie
lol
Poor paul :(
Just drop it at a mech and get everything fixed man. What it costs, it costs. Wouldn'
t you rather have flufftr on the road?

With that much oil coming out, I wonder whether there is a leak where your oil filter is......As for the ticking my old magna (TS wagon) used to tick when it was low on oil...top the oil up and you'll be fine :P

What are you fixing your car with... Duct Tape???
Seriously take it to a "proper" mechanic ie: one that actually has a shop and a hoist and importantly an ABN.
Sander
01-05-2007, 12:17 PM
Is the oilpump in these things pressure regulated?
ifso...wonder if the pressure is NOT being regulated (like a valve being stuck shut)causing the oil to seek the easiest way out....being the seals.
Just a thought

Paul,
the reason your car is now ticking is because the hydraulic tappets have run dry (no oil) and they will continue to tick untill you re fill the engine with oil.
don't worry you won't have blown anything or stuffed the motor, unless you drove another 50kms on no oil...
interms of the leak... for you to lose that much oil that fast i would say you have one of a few things....
a cracked sump or a leaking filter or you didn't tighten the sump plug...
jack the car up and look underneath for any signs of a leak.
if the filter is covered in oil then you probably blew the filter seal (to tight)
if the sump is leaking from a crack then get a new sump. if you were a noob and forgot to tighten the plug then seal it up and put fresh oil with a new filter in.. and let the car run on the spot for 5 mins. and check for oil leaks on the floor and secondly under the car.. (again with the jack)
even if you split the cam seal you shouldn't lose that much oil.. urs is a 6 so you have 2 cam seals. unless you have a DOHC 6 in which case you have 4 seals.
i would check what i have listed above before you waste your money on a mechanic mate.
if you have struggles post up some pics.
send us a pm if you need anything else buddy.
cheers

hes an awesome mechanic, he'll come out say 5 or siz times and all he asks for is a case of beer, which ios fine by me...
I know its not the oil filter/sump plug becuase i have not touched any of those, and for the fact i know its one of the cam seals...
Well hes coming over soon anyway, just gotta give him a few litres of degreaser to start him off lol...
thanks for the tips adz

No worries Paul,
i just hope you put the cam seal in without damaging it...
also a damaged cam seal won't cause you to lose that much oil...
it would have to be something on the lower half of the engine.
im almost gonna have to say you have a cracked sump or leaking filter (you don't need to touch it for it to break.....)
