i have a mits magna TE manual

ok my bro borrwed my car on thursday, as he was drivin it the timining chain snapped and bent few valves and wat not.

The mechanic thinks i may need a new engine.

If i am going to need a new engine, i dont want to put the magna engine into it, was wondering if any1 had any suggestions or would know of any motors that will fit into the magna te?

I was thinkin of a gto engine but will this fit strait in? or a few minor adjustments?

Cheers, Kyle

I believe a member on here "Clarion magna" went from a 3.0L to a 3.5L in his TF (same basic car), shoot him a pm i'm sure he would be able to tell you.
The gto engine won't fit it's orientated 180degrees around.

Im guessing by timing chain you had the 4cyl?
Then you'll probably need new engine mounts made up...

FYI all 3rd Gens are BELT driven.

The only Magna engine that was chain driven was the 4G54.

Did your engine run noisy before it snapped?I thought timming chains start ratting when worn?

Judging from his profile he has a 3L v6, and yes all 3rd gens are belt driven so it would have been your belt that snapped.

Kyle dont bother with any conversions.. 3.5 is as quick as it'll get without spending stupid amounts. Either that or scrap the car, sell wheels/springs/exhaust etc.

Playin cards tonight? I'll show ya how a 3.5 manual goes if you're there...

3.5 will bolt straight in...unsure how the elecs go though.

but dont forget when you put the motor in you need to fit the brakes from the same car and that includes master cylinder.

then you need to get a check from Mits to see if all the gizmos are working correctly and also an emissions test.

you will also need to take the car to a weigh brigde so the RTA can reprint a new reg sticker with correct tare.

as long as you can source a cheap 3.5, and get everything done the first time it should only cost $400ish in engineers fee's plus all the Mits testing.

check in the For sale section because there is a 3lt short motor for sale in there which would be easier lol :)

good luck mate, hope all goes well

i guess it depends on where you get it and what condition its in. the one in the for sale section is new and it like $1700ish i think which is a pretty damn good price.

**** That! Just bolt it in, it will run fine. It has been done before...A LOT! The KE Verada had a 3.5ltr engine, so its just a simple engine number update at the RTA.

i was under the impression that the magna motors ran non-interference heads, so snapping a belt shouldn't cause damage?

They are very interference apparently. I have heard that sometimes even 2-3 teeth off on the timing belt can cause damage.

of course you can just slap a 3.5 in it and not tell anyone. but Vic Roads state that they need an engineers report passing the new modified car. the the engineer needs all the other crap done to it before he will pass it. thats if you want a legit conversion which would really be the smart thing to do. and if its done properly the first time it wouldnt cost that much to do it.

I thought if you swap to a larger motor offered in the same model range and the rest of the hardware is the same (e.g: Brakes) then you just need to update the engine number with vicroads.

As far as I am aware all the 3rg Gens used the same brakes (including the 2.4L 4 cylinder) aside from the Ralliart/AWDs ofcourse.

The 3.0 and 3.5s from the 3rg gens are rotated 180 degrees compared to your engine.

The only 3.5L that will fit is the DOHC equivilent, good luck finding one :).

Lets clear up a few myths here.

The Verada had the 3.5, same suspension, ssme brakes, same hydrolics.....

The motor will go straight in, you shoudl be able to do an engine number change no worries as there is a model in the same year with that motor. That is of course if Vic Roads, RTA or who ever even knew it was a 3.5

You would be best off getting a wrecked KE Verada of the same vintage, change ECU harness and ECU and you should be fine.

Now as the job is done for the original post, there is no need to keep this open, question has been answered
