Cheers,

That's normal rpms for 60k/h. Engaging the overdrive permanently is ok, I think if you're concerned about fuel conservation, you should leave it on all the time as it lowers engine revs.

Remember with over-drive "off" you're only driving a 3 spd, i bet the other cars you've driven have been 4 spd or greater or a 3spd that was designed to be a 3 spd.

O/D is essentially 4th gear man. Its a 4sp automatic. And before you get in with another related question: if you put it in "2" it will idle at about 3000 and in "L" it will do 60 at about 5700ish, in "P" you cant really move without damaging your gearbox, in "R" I'm not really sure what it would idle at doing 60kmh and in "N" you could do like 200kmh and hav it idle at liek 800 and yes that is all normal.

Dont forget also. Petrol engines make more power the faster they go. Your car being a 4 cyl, will have a fewer number of power strokes per revolution than a 6cyl, so it will rev higher.

Engaging the overdrive permanently is ok, you should leave it on all the time as it lowers engine revs.
FYI
not for a TR auto
if a tr auto driver does as you suggest the end clutch will only have half the life it should have
then the metal and grit goes right through the box , bearings , gears ,kickdown band and oil pump ... filter wont stop all of it
auto rebuild vs fuel economy saved ?
2000 sounds about right, think mine is just under that while at 60 in 3rd.
Same while in 4th, mine's about 1400-1450, I remember this because I tested the same thing in a VY Acclaim at 60, it did about 1600-1650, wasn't kicking into 4th... geared badly, or just to get maximum torque... meh :bowrofl:
"L" it will do 60 at about 5700ish
Mmmmmm, don't I know this! :P
So does this falcon driver I met tonight. :)

hmm ok food for thought......thanks all.....and yes it is my first 4sp auto lol ..i been a manual man all my life..till now...
you'll find that overdrive gear pretty useful on the open road. When you open her up and cruise on a highway, you'd be surprised what kinda fuel consumption you can get out of the old magnas.

I am pretty sure in my KR verada manual it reccomends that you keep the overdrive on all the time and only take it off when you want to overtake.
Is this the case or do they just want me to buy a new gearbox sooner?

JEDI
looked into the V6 box best economy is with o/d on after 75 km out to 150 km/h
still the same box design as the 4 cyl
on the V6 performance and economy charts
there is no o/d mentioned to suggest it be engaged below that 75 km
all the auto internal parts are working when o/d is on so it will wear out the o/d
the friction plates are not as thick as the 1-2-3 friction plates and drives are
dont know anything about the 5 speed triptronics

I had my overdrive friction plate repaired when I first got my car.......$200ish.
Difference in forst tank of fuel after after repair.....420 vs 450ish (roughly, I know it was a few ks difference, but it was 1.5yrs ago).
Works out to about a $5 saving per tank. Done over 20000ks since i got it fixed so about a $220 so far and its showing no sign of slowing up. I would say its worth keeping it on,m even if it does stop working eventually and you have to get it fixed, its not something that stops your car from working. go easy.....bin drunkn
