It's probably just a stone.
Puck and I both had this problem recently. Puck fixed it himself, while I paid my mechanic to pull it apart and he found nothing!

Spray some crc around the centre of the hat, and hit it hard with a hammer to loosen it.
Does the rotor turn at all? or is it tight against the shoes? Sometimes they need a bit of coaxing with a hammer and screwdriver to get them off, if there is a lip worn on the inside.

Managed to get it off without WD was just hitting it in the wrong spot. Found the culprit the lil clip that holds the shoe tab had snapped and it was flailing around rubbing on the side. Can i take that out and leave it for say a week (keeping the shoe in and using it as normal)? or would it be better to take the shoe out all together till i can get my hands on the part.

This is the clip:

Safe to leave it off and leave the shoe on or take em both off? Obviously a temporary measure.

Sorry mate... cant sorty propperly picture a complete setup off a magna... All i'd reccomend is, try leaving it off. Work the handbrake a few times when its all back together and make sure it propperly disengages. If it does then it'll be fine. Just refrain from using the handbrake until its fixed.

crc and wd are to completly different products. crc is almost 100% alcahol (sp?) and is used in cleaning high end electrical products and conections, like computers/laptops/calculators etc etc . they use it cause it evaponates completly leaving no residue. wd-40 is oil based which is bad near any electrics so there clearly not the same or should'nt be used in the same way anyways :D
there's my useless info for the day:cool:

Well you are right about one thing in that post, the information is definately useless, and not to mention, WRONG!
I'd say when the others are talking about CRC, they are talking about CRC 5.56, which like WD-40, is a penetrating, moisture dispersant. They are practically the same product, different brand name.
The CRC product I assume you are talking about is CRC CO Contact Cleaner or CRC Automotive Electronic Cleaner, both products have the same main ingredient, Isohexanes, NOT Alcohol!

 Bravo lol
Lol, and yes they are safe in electrical connections also (automotive applications).

Have you tried using the forcing holes in the rotors? They're a pair of threaded holes that you can put a 10mm bolt into for this exact situation.
I believe that clip, or retainer as per Gregory's service&repair manual is holding shoe somewhat centred inside drum when handbrake is not engaged. That is to avoid scraping noise and excesive wear of the top of the shoe.
If missing may affect (make it difficult to adjust) handbrake adjustment. Also you may have noisy and smelly brake on the side where it is broken because of constant friction between shoe and drum which can result in excess heat which is not good.
Occasionally check the wheel to see if it is hotter than other side untill you fix it.
Do not drive without properly working handbrake.

ok so i was partly wrong. didn't know there was 2 brands with the name crc so ok thats where i went wrong. but if i was to stay under the impression that he ment crc contact cleaner then everything i said was spot on. but he obviously wasn't so i was wrong. but if i miss took that then maybe somone else did. so i just wanted to point it out that crc contact cleaner won't do thae same job and it dosen't:D
ok it's not 100% alcohol (a form of hydrocarbon isn't it kinda like buetane??) but evaporates just as fast and acts like it so i guess it's close to it.
but now i'll go hide in my corner:doubt:
