View Full Version : Changing Front brake pads..
front brakes are squeealing like crazy, and i've got some spare paddies sitting around to change em to, but im wondering how to open up the ad holders.
Dad and I were having a look, and it seems as though there is some way to just release the holder to it can then drop forwards and then let u take the pads out, but i dont know how to loosen it.
anyone done this before?

G'day there...
Changing the front brake pads;
Make sure you drain bout 2/3 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder resevoir. There are two guide pins each with a bolt which tightens into the guide pin at the top of the callipers. One is located at the top of the callipers, one at the bottom. What you want to do is only loosen the top bolt in the guide pin, and completely remove the bottom one (and pin). To do this hold the hex head part of the guide pin with a spanner (this should be the hex head located more towards the outside of the car), and loosen the bolt (the one inside towards the car on the end). Once you've removed the bottom guide pin then the whole calliper will simply rotate upwards allowing you to easily exchange the pads. Careful not to lose the springs.
After you've replaced the brake pads and put everything back together top-up the brake fluid and give the brakes a bit of a pump to bring the pads back towards the disc again... and you're set!
Any more Q's let me know and I'll clarify. I probably haevn't been the clearest here, I know...
Cheers,
Adam

Yeh its pretty easy as Kaizen said, Take out a bit of brake fluid from the resivor in the engine bay, undo one of the bottom bolt holding the caliper (hold the pin with a spanner and undo the bolt with a socket) and swing the caliper up out of the way, Shouldnt have to take the pin out and its probably best if you dont, Then take out ya old pads but remember where the 4 shims go. Push the piston back into the caliper make sure that you push it in squarely cause you can wreck the rubber arround it. Then just put the shims on your new pads and put them onto the disc, then swing the caliper back down over the pads and put the bolt back in, make sure you dont over tighten the bolt though cause they can snap.
Then pump your brakes a couple of times and top up the break fluid your away, shouldnt talk you more than an hour to do.
Goodluck!

nah, no ABS. Found out how good ABS is the hard way, totally locked up the wheels one time when i was braking harder than I needed to :S No damage or anything, just got a bit of a fright :p

Either you have jammed the calipers or you have air in the system. try a brake bleed and also check the calipers move freely on the pins. How did you retract the pistons as they are easy to do damage to

Get someone out to look at your car.
You should not be having this much trouble. Don't drive it in this condition call out a mobile mech.
