View Full Version : Sounds like there is something loose in my suspension?

At first I thought it was the Drivers side CV, however, I have notice that turning will not make it click but going over any small bump will. The noise happens in all conditions (full lock, both ways, or driving strait) so What could it be?

Hmmm is it possible your shocks are completed shagged and have no gas in them?
Or your springs could be worn/have fallen out of alignment.
If it only happens on bumps it has to be something to do with your springs/shocks.

Have a look at the top strut nut and compare it with the other side, it may have come loose. This happened to mine and sounded like a collapsed strut, but i did this and the top nut was loose.... Just tighten it on there.

also check your bump stops and the seating of your springs...

Seriously recommend checking this one out... it's the reason my ride was all bumpy when I first got my new wheels on! Someone didn't tighten the front one enough

hahahaha now thats a must!
definatly not the CV's mate. does it do it just over bumps, or when you apply force to the front of the car ie braking?

Hmm,
My car was doing this same thing. Could be a few things I suppose, so check the advice from the above posts. On mine, it turned out to be the front anti-roll (also known as "Sway") bar bushes were worn where they joined the chassis. The bar was hitting agaist the chassis member and causing a knocking noise. Way to check it to jack the car up, remove a wheel and give the anti-roll bar a good shake from side to side (don't knock the car off its jack - use axle-stands or similar) and see if it's loose, or if the D-bushes look perished. I changed mine myself. Think they cost less than $10 from mitsi parts dealer. Bit of a pain to change, but if you've got a basic tool kit of spanners and sockets, a jack and axle stands, it shouldn't take you any more than 4 hours taking your time.
Hope this helps.

I will have a look, the only seems to happen while going slow, mainly when turning and while going over small bumps.
I too also recommend giving your hubs a good check for loose/missing nuts and/or bolts, check the bottom two strut bolts, perhaps one is loose? also check your brake-line on the back of the strut (Facing the engine-bay, stick your head in and also give it a wiggle).
And as for bumpstops.. it's crucial you have bumpstops in otherwise your suspension bottom's out, not only killing your shock but can also cause you to loose traction when the suspension travel is gone and you also get a great thud of the cars weight.. Buy a good quality bumpstop as cheaper ones can split and die fairly quick in a lowered vehicle. My drivers-side KYB decided to commit suicide and took my $50 bumpstop with it and that gradually happened over only 2 or so months.. better ones should last longer.. hopefully..
