View Full Version : First time changing oil/oil filter/fuel filter. Advice pleas
I had a discussion with ADZ quite a while back and never got around to trying to change the stuff above myself.
Im wanting to attempt it later today.
I just remembered since car was low on engine oil and the engine light lights up for a few secs when ya start the car.
Is it that basic???
1)Just get under the car with a spaner, open the oil and let it run down then close it back up and change oil filter?
2)When refilling oil, is there a indicator that tells you when you topped it?
3)Fuel filter... will fuel rush down on me??? Do I need to empty the fuel somehow first before attempting fuel filter?

The oil is fairly easy, just remember to turn the sump bolt the right way; it goes anti-clockwise when looking UP at the underside of the car. Run the car for about 5-10mins to warm up the oil first so it all runs out, but be careful not to burn yourself. Remember to change the gasket on the bolt or you may get leaks. With the filter, smear fresh oil around the seal before you screw it in by hand, then tighten it fully with the tool.
Before you change the fuel filter you have to disconnect the fuel pump connector then run the car until it stalls. The filter is then an easy changeoever. If you don't do this first you will have petrol pissing out everywhere.

another way, and so you don't burn yourself is to leave the car sitting flat until the engine is stone cold, might want to leave it overnight. That way all the oil has drained into the sump and very little old oil is left in the upper cylinder and heads

and u might want to get a mecahnic to do the fuel filter. i tried yesterday to no avail. i didn't try too hard as i didn't want to strip a fuel line or something expensive like that
ok, I will leave the fuel bit till next time for a mecanic to do.
Now with the oil.
Tell me if I got this right.
1)Undo the sump bolt by anti clockwise turns.
2)leave it untill next morning so it all runs out.
3)change gasket (is all car gaskets they same? would repco have theses?)
4)smearl oil around the filter seals then screw back on.
5)pour oil back in.
Last question, I measured this morning looking at the engine oil stick, When car is cold, its a bit over the 'low' chip mark on the stick. When the car is on, its only a bit on the tip of the stick. Which one is the right indication? car on or cold?

yes and no..........
1.) Let the car sit on a level surface for a while, till the engine is cold and so the oil drains to the sump.
2.) Undo the sump bolt.
3.) Leave it till it all runs out, 5-10mins should do.
4.) take off oil filter,
5.) put on new oil filter, smear oil on the metal lip on the inside of the filter.
6.) do up sump bolt.
7.) Pour new oil in.
And the most important step Put you oil-cap back on.
As for your question, the right one is the car cold.....although i always warm the car up, and let it sit for about 20-30mins before i check the oil level.

When putting the new oil filter on, only tighten it by hand, DO NOT use the oilf fillter tools to tighten it, otherwise it will be a bitch to take off next time.
Tighten it by hand start the car let it ran for a few mins check new oil level and then check the filter again by hand.
Had a go then do had a go, couldn take the dam oil cap off. :S We even hit the spanner with a hammer. My dad open tryed opening it anti clockwise if you lay under the car foot facing front of car.
Might see if a mecanic can open it.
