Hey guys,
My alternator is on her last legs. The regulator on it has been gone for some time, but today i had my radio die on me, and my lights all but die whilst driving.
anyway, i can get a reco alternator for $110 on ebay, cheap as dirt considering the RACV want $319. So i put it to you guys, who is confident they can fit an alternator to a TR? Slab of beer/hugs/cash to anyone who would like to help me out.
As soon as someone can help me out here i will order the alternator, have it here by monday probs.

righto, ill give it a crack..
I dont think ill have a problem with a incorrectly rebuilt alternator, this guy owns a shop in melbourne that specialises in starter motors and alternators..
Linky to ebay item (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Reco-Alternator-Mitsubishi-Magna-TN-TM-TP-TR-TS_W0QQitemZ280111159362QQihZ018QQcategoryZ10400QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
I've got the repair manual here, i was just afraid of overtightening the belt...should i buy a new belt as well or just reuse the old one??

Turn the belt inside out. If It has cracks or missing bits replace it and keep the old 1 in the boot just in case.

If its in good nick re use it.

If you have a/c you hafta slacken off the compressor and remove that belt first.

Stagma pulled it apart and found it to be faulty, so i sent him a nice colourful email ^D lol. he sent me another alternator which was good but make sure u check it well before puttin it on ur car.

Thanks guys,
Broke down on a main road last night on the way home from work lol! So this morning ran down to pick a part and got a second hand one for $32. Whacked it in, works a beauty. Wasn't hard at all. And the one i got looked as though it hadn't been on the car long, its spray painted and very clean.
I've asked for a refund from the ebay dude, buckley's chance of getting one though..anyone need an alternator? :bowrofl:

one forum member bought off ebay and found the alternator rebuilt incorrectly had to be sent back

might have some pics to help
disconnect battery terminal
unclip regulator and undo wire to alternator
undo through bolt on the block exhaust may get in the way
just slacken off 14mm bolt down along the slide adjustment first
then undo the top adjusting nut (long thread )
this dropss the belt off

had the alternator light come on briefly this evening on the way home from work - but the lights and electrical system didnt dim, as it did when the light used to come on. It hasn't come on since, but i'm a little worried.
I'm getting this other one from ebay in this week. I'll chuck it in and see if its working ok, if so i guess it'll be my spare in the boot...
Is there any way to check that all the components in the second hand one i have are fine?

if your battery light comes then the car is running on the battery alone, alternator is dying. get the new one on before your battery dies, i got it on just in time lol

not necessarily - i think it may just be the voltage regulator on this one.
I'm about to go up to the wreckers and get it swapped over for a (hopefully) working one. Then i'll get the new one delivered in a few days.
I'll let everyone know how it goes.
