After speaking with some pro's, ive made the leap into silliness. Today i lashed out and fited a set of 4" Clarion 2 ways (not the new ones, the old ones, there old top of the range ones.) To set up a 3 way stage in the VW, i used a pioneer Crossover, a 4 channel amp, a pair of VDO MPS1700 6.5" drivers, and the New clarions.
Its realitivly simple to do, and fairly effective way to raise the sound stage, well if you have the spaces.
The 4" co-axials are mounted to the top of the dash, on thier own channels on the amp, running from about 750hz and upwards. this is done on the crossover onm the amp. The VDOs are running off the other 2 channels, through the Pioneer crossover, to create a Band pass for the midbass freq's. This is set from 80hz (on the amp) to whatever the crossover point on the crossover was. i dont realy know how high this is. The levels can be tuned via the fader on the headunit as to how much mid bass you want, compaired to the mid and trebble.
All up. what iv'e achived is a raised soundstage, and better control over the midbass.
It now sounds as if you are in the first couple of rows of a concert, and the vocalist is standing on the dashboard. then the back up singers come in either side.
I'll post some pics.
