View Full Version : Noise at 1800rpm

I recently had my auto replaced in my '99 TH 3.5L Magna. This fixed a shuddering problem I had at about 60kph under slight acceleration. I now have another problem (surprise surprise!) When the car is in any gear, there is a rattle/scraping noise that seems to be coming from the driver's side of the engine bay. As soon as the car hits 2000rpm the noise disappears. Also, when I am sitting in park or neutral and rev the car I get a similar noise. I suspect (after reading a few threads in this forum) that the baffles in the exhaust may be the cause of the noise when the car is in park or neutral. However, the noise I get when in gear at 1800rpm seems to be more of a scraping noise than a rattle and make me doubt that the baffles are the cause of this issue.
Please help!

Hi,
If you want to drop over sometime I can have a look, there are a couple of thigs that can cause this, exhaust, belt temsionors or the front pully has come loose.

Sounds good. Where abouts are you? I am in central Vic.
Cheers!

I have the exact same problem -- could you let us know if you find the cause. Thanks

I bought a spotlight the other day and ended up ripping the battery surround out because it was half broken. I also tapped on the plastic cover at the front of the motor just out of curiosity. After that I took the car for a fast drive in a bouncy paddock and bottomed out all over the place. After a good clean the car's bad noises seemed to disappear. I have no idea what made it come good but it is now sounding like a new car. All I can say is BL@@#Y Mitsubishi Magnas!
If this cure failed to work I was going to have to resort to the old petrol and match cure that seems to fix all problems permanently! I can't wait until the finance is paid off and I can buy a real car!
Good luck!

Ouch - that's a bit rough!
Each to their own, however I reckon Magnas are extremely underrated when you consider the piles of steaming horse offal passed off as equivalent by Holden and Ford (look at the '99 AU Falcon and '99 VT Exec, then look at the '99 TH Advance - I drove all three and bought the latter :)). My TH 3.5 auto has 170,000 k's on it and while it isn't a new car any more, it's still smooth, powerful and rattle-free (other than the result of me pulling the dash apart), even after 8 years.
Sure, they're not perfect - which car is? - but I plan to keep mine for a while.

This thread started off well then turned pointless.
If anyone else wants to post a similar problem with realistic need to get advice please feel free.
