Hi all,

I am new to this site but since I have found it, it is excellent.
I have a TJ 2002 magna advance with 98000 km on the clock. I noticed the auto was playing up a bit. I got it serviced but still had some problems. Driving home the other day in slow traffic, I lost all gears whilst stopped in a traffic line-up. I turned the car off and the auto worked fine again (only for a short time).

Played up again the next day and by this time I've had enough. Off to the mechanic. He rings me too advise the auto will need to be reconditioned. The filter was full of metal and had also ground away some of the tranmission parts. It looks like something has let go inside and caused a hell of a lot of damage. Repair bill $2900 including 2yr/24 mths warranty or go with a rebuild from Mitsi for $3400 plus fitting with 1 yr/12 mth warranty.

Has anyone else had any trouble like this - this is not the tip tronic auto as per the later TJ series.

see if you get one from the wreckers, there where a couple on ebay a while back not sure if they are there still.

but it all depends what you want to spend.

so the $2900 is a full rebuild of the exsisting transmission?

See if you can get a second opinion somewhere... when it comes to transmissions, it never hurts, and you'll more than likely find somewhere cheaper.

Did the mechanic say exactly what let go in the box?

Might not need a full recon.

I was pretty hard on my Tippy's and as a result I am on my third one. With the first two it was a case of the heat in the transmission warping a mild steel (yes mild steel!!!) circlip. This circlip let go and was not caught by the internal filter (that is not actually sealed correctly along 2 of it's edges). It makes a few cycles, then into the belts and gears it goes.
Apparently, with a Mitsu Reconditioned Gearbox, this issue has been resolved. I paid somewhere between $1500 and $2000 each time for a reconditioned box (exchange).

I went hard on my auto and that resulted in me shattering 2 gearbox's. I have an auto gearbox with 26,000kms on it that I'm trying to sell. pm me if you're interested man, It'll cost a lot less than a mitsibishi rebuild! lol

^^ Good deal there, Never get these major things done at mitsubishi, unless its free or under warranty, otherwise you will nearly always get ripped off. You will find someone to do it for $1500 - $2000 just have to ring around. Otherwise if you do buy the box from liberate it will be alot cheaper, just the labour to put it in might be a few hundred.

Good luck with it, its no secret the box's are weak.

hi all

thanks for your replies

yes it is a total rebuild inc all the electrics

several of the parts inside were worn away from the metal floating around

i am unsure of the part but it has 4 or 5 cogs around itand these are held in place with a screw or something like it and then there is 2 washers underneath - 1 silver and 1 bronze

the bronze clour was noted in the filter and he was unsure what it was un til he got further into the job and this part just mentioned above just broke at the cogs or whayever they are. This part is not cheap - approx $800 just for this one. I did see it pulled apart and i was shocked at the damage
i asked what causes this as even the mechanic said he has never seen this worn like this in a mitsi auto. He said it could be caused from not allowing the oil to circulate for a few seconds before selecting gears or being a little ruff on the auto. I don't do any of these.
I asked could it have been from using the incorrect fluid but he doesn't think so

i will be able to tell you on thurs - this is when i pick the car up and the wallet will be a lot lighter or i shud say the credit card will be a lot heavier.

Nah - no cooler needed for that one.

If you've seen the tranny in person with the metal flakes floating around and damaged parts then that's fine. I was wondering if they just said it needs a full rebuild to get $$$ out of you, when a few parts would suffice.

I would always run a cooler even if i dont tow with the car. Heat is the thing that destroys auto boxes and running a cooler is only going to be beneficial.

there certainly was a lot of metal in the filter - cud have been going for awhile...last 2 auto services wwere done by just flushing - i did not know at the time that the filter was internal

my car was originaly was a budget rent a car but it had 38000km when i bought it

magna's are a damn good car for the price - i certainly wud buy another - i notice the 380's are around $20,000 at the moment with low kms
