G'day all, I'm considering upgrading from my current 1st gen (TP manual carby) to a tr or ts V6 wagon. What sort of performance, fuel economy and reliability can i expect? I haven't made my mind up between manual or auto, any suggestions?

I went from a TP auto sedan to a TS V6 (both sedan) my fuel efficiency is better now.

Powers alot better, One of the few cars of the era which actually has a bit of grunt when you rev its tits off..
Check for the usuall smokey exhaust on start up and give the engine a very good looking over for oil leaks especially on the timing belt side.

Great car:)

Spend that little bit more and save yourself time and hassle with the 2nd gens..

Get a 3rd gen.

how can you say its a great car when yours has spent a majority of its time on blocks?

Dont get lebonese mechanics to touch it and it will be a great car.

And im serious in that comment dont use leb mechanics....

but um they are great cars. although even though no matter how well you service it, the stem seals will eventually go

p.s. car got off blocks tonight:P

Nothing much is "wrong" with them but now that car prices are dropping even more people are told to steer more towards the 3rd gens as they are just a newer car, and hopefully with a newer car comes less things to go wrong..
Saying that you can get a base 3rd gen for like $4ishK now

but would you rather a nice 2nd gen for $4k or a run down 3rd gen for $4k? i know which one i would pick

i agree... at they're age they can struggle if not cared for. 3rd gen would be more reliable and perform better in 95% of aspects...

Cant match a mild modded 2nd gen for looks though...

spent about 2hrs today/tonight taking out injectors to get them cleaned on my bro's verada ks... lol tracking a problem, a new one now but it has done 400,000k's.

buyer information for 2nd gen:

I disagree with the quote "buy a 3rd gen" line as you can buy a 3rd gen but if you have no idea what to look for it can be a lemon, just like buying any car. You can get a nice clean car with low k's, actually go over it yourself and it can last you a very long time.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but.....

"And im serious in that comment dont use leb mechanics...."

I thought this was a decent forum.....!

Racist generalisations have no place....

No I'm not Middle Eastern but that's not the point.... I'm just amazed at how anyone can make such a stupid comment on a public forum...

I've had a really bad expereince with a White Angle Saxon mechanic... didn't ask him his nationaility at the time but should we all not use them as well....???

I'm amazed at how the moderators can ignore such a comment...

dude relax. its a joke man. although he was being serious at the fact that all of his problems came from the guy who was meant to "fix" them, and in the end costing Tuff a hell of a lot more than if he did take it to a decent mechanic. i can understand how Tuff feels.

and i also have my opinions on Tuff's qoute, and stand by them in most cases, but ill leave those opinions in my mind, as in which maybe Tuff should have done the same.

and for the record. one members thoughts on a subject doesnt make the entire forum bad. so i think you should take that remark back mate.

back on the topic.
im with Bain on this, get a 3rd gen if you can afford it. i love mine, and you will understand why people tell you to get a 3rd gen when you drive them.

i ended up putting as much oil in as fuel at one time with my TS lol seems to be a common problem with the 2nd gens, in the end i said enough is enough. plus i needed a wagon for work and the extra power for towing.

i must admit i love the clean 2nd gen look, they look so rootable! fuel economy is good for the V6 provided youre very light footed on it (as with most cars). my 3.5 wagon get better milage out of the same amount of fuel as my TS did, and i drive it harder than the TS (not thrashing it and redlining all the time though).

to give you an idea, i picked up my TH 3.5 auto wagon for $5500 with 160xxx on the clock. but admittingly, i did get the POVO pack exec :(

If you can save your Pennies, get an XR6 Turbo!!! FTW! And make sure you flat shift it!

Slyts6...

I didn't say the forum was bad... I think it's a great forum...I was questioning the decency of allowing the comment to stand that's all ... there is a big difference

I said that I was surprised that the moderators would allow such a comment to go unchecked.

Now help me understand what part of "and I'm serious in that comment" would lead anyone to think he was joking?

If he (or anyone for that matter has) had a bad experience with a mechanic does that mean it was a bad experience because of the guys race or because of their competence / ethics?

Would it not be much more constructive if he had said "there is a mechanic in North Sydney / South Melbourne / Brisbane West Side that really screwed me and I would not ever recomend anyone use him... pm me for details off line if required" if that's what he was really trying to say rather than "all mechanics that are Lebanese are crooks and no one should ever use them" which is what he actually said?

What am I supposed to take back again? Just so I'm clear.....

OH GOD (can i use that? or is that religious bashing?)
Do you want me to delete it? Or do you want me to rephrase that?

In my mind, He was nothing but a dodgey leb mechanic. Ripped me off HUNDREDS of $ And i couldnt care what bloody nationality he was.
Ahkmal says it (the comedian) Are you going to write a letter to him? Or is it ok if he says it becuase hes of middle eastern appearance?
Sif thats "racism"
Next your going to tell me not to say "blackboard" becuase thats offensive all to African americans:nuts:

I know Paul meant his comment light heartedly, referring solely to the mechanic who gave him the runaround.

Sometimes its humourous to make broad generalisations (eg Poms are **** at cricket), as was Paul's comment, a broadly generalised humourous comment.

I doubt he's gonna go burn down all the Lebo Mechanics, or bash Lebo children or rape their mothers, he was making a "joke".

Bla.

Never thought a racial debate would spring up from a question about TS magnas! Back on topic, I don't want a 3rd gen, nothing against the car but I don't want to buy anything worth insuring 'till I'm over 25.

I might just test drive a TS and decide from there... Wouldn't mind a Verada, plenty of buttons to distract me from driving.
