View Full Version : Rewiring TJ fronts

Spent half my day rewiring my front speakers with aftermarket speaker wire. God, was a very, very annoying, but well worth the effort.

Who ever said that the door gromits are tight in a TJ with power windows and mirrors, well your wrong. There tighter then tight :P. However, i was able to run two lengths of 16guage speaker wire.

Lesson learnt ? Anything is possible

Not to dis-credit your efforts (or probably the pain you went through :P) but why did you replace the stock wire? and only use 16 guage? I wouldn't think the stock wire would be smaller than that? The stock wire is pretty good, i've kept it for my splits and they sound fine.

16 ga is fine for speakers... speakers are high level AC current and dont need thick wiring.

Yeh i was more referring to the fact that he's gone to the effort of replacing the stock speaker wire with speaker wire that's not really any thicker, but meh maybe he has other reasons :).
*EDIT*
Out of curiousity, does anyone know the guage of the stock speaker wire? I would guestimate to to be around 14-16ga.

Stock would be somewhere between 16 and 20ga. Those grommets are hard, a coat hanger makes life a LOT easier!! :D

Stock speaker wire looks very thin to me. Atleast 18guage, maybe 20. If you actually look at the wires, they are thick, cheap quality. Dont let anyone tell you wire is wire, there are differences.

And im running two lenghts of 16guage in each door. One for the tweets, other for the woofer. So, i suppose even if stock wire is 16guage. 2 x 16guage is better than one set

lol i got lazy and just mounted my tweeters in the pods on the dash, i saw the grommet and just thought to myself "**** that".
I'm only running 100wrms at the front and the speaker wire that came with my speakers was actually thinner than my stock wire, so figured it couldn't hurt :).

If I were to mount the tweeters in the doors then yeh, i probably would have rewired both wires while i was there, didn't realise you'd installed tweeters, my bad :).

No worries mate. Im going to run active in the near future, so thought why not get all the wiring out of the way with now.

As for your tweets in the dash, how does it sound with reflections off the glass ? Was thinking about puttin mids in there, would require alot of tunning, but thought it could help raise my soundstage. Or perhaps, jst run ambiants up there

I spoke to a respected installer in Albury about having tweets in the dash... and he said he has done it before and it works really well. He said to get a laser pointer the aim the tweet so that the reflection off the glass crosses the line of the other side somewhere in the middle of the car...

To me they sound fine, maybe lack abit up in the higher frequencies if anything. Mids should sound alright in there (i'm sure there are better places though, i only put my tweeters in the dash because it was easy and doesn't sound too bad).

I'm not really into SQL, so i'm not sure on your tuning possibilities being up there, but i would say it would be harder to get the angles right due to the way the dash sits and also i'd imagine you'd have to have them sticking up out of the dash which would get annoying having to drive with that in your face. Tim is an SQL competitor, so he'll be able to tell you alot more about your possibilities than i can.

I think that when it comes time to do my stereo install ill go through the pain of re-wiring the system, more for possible future upgrades than anything, probably use 16awg. Other than for that reason i think the stock wiring would be good enough for every other application.
