Nah 225/50 is the norm for magnas, that is unless this guy has aftermarket rims that are 7.5/8 inches wide :).
Instead of buying new tyres (which will negate the fuel you'll save), just pump the ones you've got on now up abit more.

I meant the norm for 17" rims.

Who fitted the 215/45R17? That is an illegal tyre for the magnas and there is a huge diff in
overall diameter between 235/45R17 and 215/45R17:

Stock 225/50R17 say at 100km/hr
215/45R17 would have an actual speed of 95 km/hr
235/45R17 would have an actual speed of 98 km/hr

and most importantly:
Stock 225/50R17 per 10000kms distance
215/45R17 would clock 104796kms
235/45R17 would clock 102055kms

and thus, if you are comparing the fuel usage according to the odo, then there would be
2741km difference per 100000. That is a lot which explains why it looks like the bigger tyre
travelled less.

I went from stock of 215/60R16 to 225/50R17 and have not noticed any difference in fuel
usage.

Also, unless your wheels are 7.5 inches or wider, you cannot fit 235/45R17 tyres and if it
was stock rims with 7", best tyre is the 225/50R17 (OEM size).

yeh but its WAY over the stock rolling diameter.. so your speedo would be quite out, not to mention the rubbing you must have???

i have 225/30/R20 and its about as close as you can get to stock rolling diameter

only scrubs with people in the back.. and is only 5% over and is still considered legal.
although car is at stock height at present.. will need to look into doing something about the scrubbing when it comes time to drop it.

back on topic. my old car has 17x7.5" has 235/35R17 and gets 800km+ out of a tank on high way driving. so I would be checking the pressure in yours as thats probably whats causing back economy. I have mine at 38 with the 17's.

Rule is +-3% change from stock rolling diameter.

235/35R17 on a magna? I presume your old car was a magna otherwise you won't be
comparing its fuel usage. 235/35R17 would be too small and way under specified minimum
load rating. It is 9% smaller than stock 225/50R17 tyres,10.2% smaller that 215/60R16 and
7.9% smaller than 205/65R15. which makes it very illegal.

Wrong. Check QLD Transport (http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/resources/file/eb57c508de5dea8/Modification_jan05v2.pdf). In summary,
"The rim diameter may be varied from the standard size but the overall diameter of the tyre
must not vary by more than +15mm or -26mm."

You'll have to get the car engineered and get the speedo, odo re-calliberated.

And your 245/35R20 is 22mm over 225/50R17 and 33mm over 205/65R15 and also
16mm over 215/65R16.

225 50 17s are standard for tj vrx with brigestone grid 2s but u now need to purchace grid3 as they only make grid 3s in 17 and above should be about 250- 275 per tyre:cool:

The different width of tyre also means the the diameter and circumference have increased. This will reduce your acceleration as the overall transmission ratio between the ground and the engine is less.

The only way the tyres would drag more is if they are flat as has been mentioned or the new tyres are made of leqad and has greatly increased the unsprung mass.

You should be looking at at least 35-40psi (double check with the tyre shop) to get a decent mileage out of the tyres and reduce and rolling drag.

P.S. This is a great site for checking new tyre sizes http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp
