Hay again, yet another question.
i am having a little problem at the moment.
when im driving and have the air con on the car seems to be very sluggish. but as soon as i turn it off i get all my power back. has anyone else had this problem or is it common?

That's a characteristic of having air con Im afraid.
Aircon robs the car of a bit of power so it can work.

You can try ECO mode that seems to take slightly less power to run, but either way you can't get a/c without sacrificing engine power. On my friend's Mirage turning a/c off is like hitting a Nitrous button :D

i think the air-con robs some power from the engine. something along the lines of 10-15%. so you know what to do the next time you take on that car beside you

The ECU (clever little bugger) turns off the air con briefly during very hard acceleration the reason for this engineering marvel is to allow maximum power when overtaking.
This applies to the TH not that I've ever noticed it, but i can't really say i feel it come on during normal driving.
It is very noticeable at idle so it must rob a bit of power as the ECU (clever little bugger) has to bump up the idle to compensate.
It also holds the air con off when after you start the car for about 10-15 seconds to allow the engine to stabilise.

On Average, with the aircon on, it robs 8Kws off the power of the car....

mmm without aircon and other mods and cons, the engine can be very nice 8)
many things are opereated with belts and the more belts the less power.. i dunno about magnas but remove the power steering belt and theres some more power ;)

i wonder if anyone has tried that going down the quarter for that lil extra

Thanks for all your help. I know that my cousin in his Ford XY (Built for street drags) removed any belts which he wouldnt need, like the air con which he says gives him more power.

yup i agree..my th too is definitely very sluggish when the air con is on, really had me worried (thought i had a prb with the car), but i think thats just a characteristic of all cars. Still surprised you could lose so much power with air con on though

just a little something about the ECU turning the Air-Con off when you floor it, it isn't actually the ECU, it's the Air - Con motor clutch ingaging to stop itself kill itself, Air-con compressors are 2 stroke motors, they like to operate between certain RPM ranges, depending on what Air Compressor you have. So basically, when you floor it with the air - con on, it would operate until the cut-off RPM, which is usually 4 to 5k RPM.
Cheers.

you seem to be losing more than the usual power. the power loss with air-con on shouldn't be THAT bad for you to feel it's sluggish. but yea, it's noticeable.

yeah the power loss is weird...any ideas as to what prbs there could be if the car loses a lot of power when air con is on?

Usually means you don't have enough power to begin with.. there isn't really anything that would cause a compressor to use more power than it originally does e.g. a fault.
