hey i got a quote the other day to get extractors and an exaust on my car. i got a 2003 magna sports. the first place said i can keep the standard exaust and just get the extractor and a sports muffler because the exaust is already 2 1/2 inch stock.
the second place said i NEED an exaust put through and you cant just put a muffler on the standard one.
just wondering if you guys can help me out. what have you done to ur exaust system and do i have to change the whole exaust system.
thanks

the standard exhaust is nearly 2.5" so you can stick with it if you want. Sounds like the other shop is just trying to get you to spend money :doubt:

What he said. Being a sports, I'm pretty sure it will also have a straight thru muffler. So essentially you already have a pretty good exhaust / muffler combo. The only thing that isn't already pretty decent is the factory headers. Don't expect huge things from upgrading these to extractors, but it will make some difference.
Then there is always the issue of sound..... If you have your heart set on having a car that sounds "tougher" then talk to your chosen exhaust shop regarding how this can be achieved best.

extractors and a muffler is all you should worry about , as everyone has said
maybe a full system only if you intend on chasing big power,

I would of thought that being a 'sports' the muffler is already 'high-flow' and not a restrictive tri-flow design like exec/ES models.
What type of headers are we talking about, Pacies?

i have extractors and a hi flow cat on my standard exhaust, i to also have a sports, and it fits fine, and has increased power above 2500 revs

yeh the extractors to be fitted would be pacemakers. by the sounds of things i might just go the extractors and muffler. as long as it sounds good. will save me some money aswell. thanks alot for your help.

exec's dont come with triflow mufflers
I thought they did?
Don't they get their name from the fact it changes direction 3 times in a Z formation?
See attached image, that's what i thought the flow of an exec muffler looks like, why it's dead quiet but flows so sh!thouse.

Execs DO have tri flow rear mufflers.
Id get the RPW extractors though. the pacemakers were designed for the 3.0L and have smaller primaries as a re****. The Race design RPW extractors were designed for the 3.5 and flow better as a result.

The Race design RPW extractors were designed for the 3.5 and flow better as a result.
But the RPW design is also 40% more expensive for only 20% extra gain, which is worth thinking about.
(disclaimer: I did buy and was very happy with the RPW extractors)

exec do not have triflow mufflers.. we've been over this one a few times on AMC.. someone had even cracked open an exec one and put a diagram up of its setup... its a baffled setup with 3 chambers..... triflow mufflers flow really well... my TJ series 1 Sports was fitted with a triflow from the factory.. they flow extremelly close to straight through units but are not quite as loud..and yes the triflow is the one with the "S" internal pipe setup
if exec's had triflow mufflers there would be barely any gain changing it to a straight through unit as the triflow flows nearly as well as the straight through unit.. you would barely notice a gain changing them... so where does the 8kw come from between the exec and sports/vrx?
so where does the 8kw come from between the exec and sports/vrx?
I'll cut open mine in a few weeks and show you where the 8kw comes from by the muffler change.

Yeh that's the same as the pic i attached (well my crappy paint diagram :P).
That's why i thought they were referred to as tri-flows, because the exhaust enters into the muffler, does a 180 and then another 180 (3 directions).

So is that not considered a tri-flow design?

sports and vr-x's have "straight thru" mufflers. The exec IS a triflow.
I dont know about the price of the pacies over east. but the quotes i got the RPW race extractors ended up cheaper for me. that included fitting

That's surprising.. pacemakers can be bought for around $380 if you look hard enough. Last time I looked the RPWs were still asking $660?

Bingo. Now it is clear why exec mufflers choke over 5k rpm?

Yeh but it makes it dead quiet (for all those grandpas who can't hear anything anyway lol).

Maybe he's installing them for free (or bugger all) for local customers. But even then it would be a stretch to be cheaper than pacemakers installed. Pretty sure I was quoted around the $450 - $500 mark for pacies installed.

The RPW extractors are very expensive because they have to pay a lot for them as well - liverpool exhausts are very dear - try and get them from them - they price gouge like nobodys business - $1000 or so IIRC.
Long story short - they are cheaper from RPW. Nicely made and designed too. Seen some dyno graphs from pacemakers that have been less than flattering.

i work at rob bliss exhaust in brissie and you can use the standard piping and change mufflers. all the standard piping is also mandrel bent rather than press bend which decreases the diameter of the pipe through the bend.

if you think about it, mandrel or press bent, can be a load of crap. What happens when the exhaust goes around a corner? Its going to travel around the outer edge isnt it? Something to think about?????

Press bent corners have a smaller diameter in the corners, and this constricts the exhaust flow.

Martin.

I had Pacies fitted + Supercat rear muffler & a (almost) straight thru intermediate resonator (Hot dog). Wicked sound & made a HUGE difference to power/torque & fuel economy. (Especially when the Unichip was installed with the help of a dyno......) Total cost (less the Unichip) was about $900.
