There's a used car dealer in Nambour who has a green 1996 TS Wagon 3.0 manual on offer for $5990.
I've been to see it but haven't driven it. The car's pretty fair - a few parking dings here and there and a few tiny hailstone dents on the roof - but it has only done 128,000 kms (short trips judging by the rust in the exaust pipes). The car's a 5/1996 build so it's the newest TS you can buy.
But 5990!.
I really want one of these and they are hard to find so I'm thinking of offering 5 grand with a new exhaust, safety certificate and 6mths rego. Or would that just be stupid of me?

sounds half decent, obviously take it for a drive first and see how it handles and whatnot, then make your decision. picsorban! lol

Theres a few trains of thought...
If you love the 2nd gen shape, go for it, i myself could not go a 3rd gen as i like the 2nd gen shape alot better..
Withe the amount of k's it seems pretty good, but remember the hailstone dints in the roof will be expensive to repair, so theres more money.
if you dont mind the 3rd gen shape, I know you can get a 3rd gen 3.5L wagon for about the same price mate...

Way way overpriced, if you're happy paying 5 grand with the above mentioned fixed, and they accept, then that's good. In the end it's worth what you're willing to pay.

i can't post pics from here or add the link.
It's on the Trading Post website - Qld - used cars - magna wagon etc.
Nasty green unfortunately, but it is a manual v6 :)
i would pay 5 grand tops for it being in top condition.

my first gen has less klms and no dints , i paid $1400 which was high. ok it's older and 4 cly but ive seen better 2nd gens for that price and thats up here in nth QLD where the prices are higher anyway. i'd say don't bother . just give it some time and u will find what u want for less more than likely (as in the coluor u want,no damge, one old lady owner). it's hard to wait when uve got money to spend but u'll thank your self later when u find the gem u've been looking for.
Hmmm, I think it's a little high for what it is specification-wise, but those are rare, TS/V6/Wagon/MANUAL.
But yeah, personally I think it's a bit much. My brother got his KS XI for 5k, 150,000 kms on the clock.
And thats from a dealer.. in SA..

agreed,
its not worth that much.
i have a 94 TS v6 manual and i paid 8k 4 years ago... would be worth maybe 3.5 with all the custom work i have done... mind u i have 231,000 on the clock...
offer 3.5 - 4 once you have driven it, check for obvious knocks/vibrations/CV's etc...
as someone said... hailstone dmg on the roof will cost you a fortune to repair...

:stoopid: ...thats a fair bit for a 2nd gen, and even 2nd gen owners will all agree... i got my manual 96 TS for $1900 and it had 100100ks on the clock, and i admit that was a rare find, my opinion is to pay no more than $4k ...spend the rest on mods! or...you could keep the money and buy a new (DOHC!!!!) engine for yours....
Cheers,

I've missed out on two other cars in recent weeks by a matter of a day or two, one beuty with 145000k on the clock for $3350 and another with 160,000, so i'm getting a bit jumpy.
With those low Km I could be driving this one for another six years or so which would be good value motoring.
But yes, it is a lot of money for an eleven year old car.

nah, the worst thing u can do is buy a car under pressure. You will end up paying way too much for it.

It doesn't matter how many km's it's done as long as it has a full service history.
I got a 1994 TS V6 manual wagon with air bag and it has 210.000km's which I paid $660 for it and it drives just as good as my 1995 Verada Touring wagon (manual) which has 110.000Km's.
$5990 for a 2nd gen is to much regardless how many km's it's done.
There's another 1 listed in the Tradeing Post a 1995 V6 manual wagon 160.000km's for $3990

service history means jack **** mate...
it can be serviced every 5000kms and still be pulled through it ****
i tend to find that the v6 engines(SOHC) on these cars will start to get tired at around 200 - 220 K depending on how they have been driven... and anyone who sais otherwise clearly doesn't know anything about mechanics and metal fatigue.
agreed the engine can keep going for longer and longer( i know some which have done 350 plus... and mine would probably do about the same.... i won't dispute that fact at all...
ie... mine has 231 and i know for a fact the engine is tired, i have 2 blown rings, and it uses oil, but it still goes well so i don't care...
he is paying for the fact that he doesn't have to fix all these things straigt away and will still have good life out of the engine before it gets tired...
i agree however that the advertised price is to high... he should be looking around the 3.5k level
just informing people that service history doesn't mean everything it claims to...
i service my own car every 10k and its been going now for 170K kms with no issues at all...
just because it sais full service history... IMHO doesn't mean a thing!
btw service's are generally a rip off anyway... they replace things when not required...
ie I went to a mechanic (for a laugh) and asked him to check the lower bushes... he said they were all shot and i needed 4 knew ones, i then asked him to show me why and he said, look they are cracked! and i said so? and he said once they crack they are useless....
i then proceeded to ummm and ahhh then i said so where did you get ur mechanic license?
he told me and i forget but i proceded to tell him he doesn't know what he is talking about,
because the lower control arm bushes on my car are fluid filled bushes and if they were cracked they would have leaked and sagged, neither of which was the case (it was only a rubber surface crack) he then tried to tell me that they couldn't be fluid filled... so im like ok buddy....whatever you reckon... and guess what... I WIN!
so please people, don't believe everything a service report tells you, and please inform yourself before going to these rip off mechanics (no offence to mechanics who actually do know what they are talking about)

Problem there is if you pay 5,000 for it then want to sell it, youll be lucky to get 2,000-2,500 for it straight off the lot.
ADZA27

im not disputing the servicing fact...
im saying that even with servicing, the nature of mechanics is that things fail, metal fatigues, rubber perishes, things happen... you can't stop them...
yes regular servicing is ok but it won't stop a piston ring blowing.. (you can't tell from a regular service)
but at 110,000 you would have a 10% chance of having the piston ring blow... where as at 220,000 its more like 90%
obviously not always the case.....
as i said mine has done 231 and still going... but i have never taken it to a servicing department... you can do the basics at home and it will keep you going.
if it had 250 on the clock it would be worthless...
it only has low Kms on it so there is a lot of good life in it.
pay the extra little bit in knowing that its not that old in the tooth.

TN88 - my car's a 2.6 auto and it's worn out (chains and gearbox - 251,000k) and I don't want to spend the money on fixing it up. It's just to boring.
I'd rather buy a 3.0 manual and fix it. i want the extra power and economy. I drive a lot and enjoy it. I think i would enjoy a v6 even more.
I missed out on the $3990 car - already sold as have one or two others in recent weeks. They seem to sell fast.
I think they are asking too much for the green car, and I think i will wait a little longer yet see if the price comes down and what else comes on the market.
I want to get a car I can look after properly, improve, and do a few mods too and that will be fun to take on brisk country drives etc. If it ultimately needs repairs then so be it. I love the look of second gens and I think they are nicer to drive that the thrid gen cars with a better driving position and visibility.

How come you don't trade in your current car for the other one and make a cash offer with it.
Don't let the car yards make the offer, they'll try and rip you off. Go in and be firm. Say I'll give you this car plus X amount of money for that one! If they say no walk away.

I would'nt be paying that much for a 2nd gen, although if it had less then 100,000k's it may be worth it, but make sure you check everything before you buy it, theres a list around somewhere of what to look for.

It better be bloody good for that money. That is a lot to pay for a TS.
You seem like a sensible sort of guy that likes to know about and look after his cars. I'd look for a private sale in the mid $2k. And hell if you had to do $3k in repairs on it, you'd still be in front. You could basically replace anything that's gonna die on the car for $3k.
I paid $2400 for a 95 KS Verada with 210,000k on it a few months ago. No service history on it but it drove well. 4 months on, I've only replaced the timing belt and given it the mild TLC treatment and it's still going strong. I've barely spent a cent on it. It's not perfect, but I don't care cos it was so cheap. When something goes wrong on it, i'll just replace it!
Think of how boring your life would be if you brought a basically brand new TS magna. You'd have nothing to contribute to this forum anymore!

Ok a few of you are going to think I got ripped but I drove the car today and it was great. Just beautiful to drive, drum tight with no rattles, powerfull, beautifully clean throughout. It felt like a new car. There's a full service history with it showing genuine low KMs
I got it for 5,000 with 6 mths reg and onroads paid. So the car cost about 4500 dollars. This is way over redbook, but I see redbook doesn't have a figure for such low KM vehicle.
All being well I should get trouble free driving for the next 3-5 years which is a bargain compared with the depreciation people take on new cars and also because this is just the kind of car I want because:
It's a 2nd gen
It fits my windsurfing gear
It's a v6 manual
It has a towbar
I can use my old Rola roofracks

$5000 is resonable for a 1996 TS from a dealer with fairly low km's.
That green looks good, it must be a TE Magna colour as I never seen a TR or TS in that colour before. If you look after it should go for another 200.000km's.

The colour is called "Green Stone".
Here are some more pics now that I have got the car home today.
The exhaust is a bit noisy so I'll get that fixed.
The car was first registered in September 2006 and was serviced every 5000ks since then. The previous owner drove only about 10,000 per year so he had it serviced twice a year. I'm going to get it serviced next week and every 10,000 after that and drop the oil myself every 5000 in between.

Honestly I hope I get a good 150,000 more ks out of it - or five years.
I think I'll change the steering wheel and yeah the seats are a bit hard. In fact the ride is harder and more jiggly than the TR. I don't know why that is. Maybe because the suspension isn't worn out?!!
