Hi Guys,

I own a 2004 Magna TL ES Sedan (Build Date Sept 03). I am considering gas as an option. I was looking for input on anyone who has either put on the vapour injection system or the old mix converter system. Is the vapour injection system as good as they say with no loss of power and worth the approximate $2000 extra. I tow a camper trailer (Jayco Swan about 1 tonne) and am looking at a big trip later in the year which is why I am considering a gas conversion now. If any one thinks don't waste your money please let me know? Cheers.

Can i ask what the exact prices of both are?
you might want to do some maths and figure out after how many k's you will actually be saving money in.

there was something like this in the herald which said after about 21,000K you will start to save some money.
Cause $2000 is alot if you dont plan on keeping the car for a few years

The Injection method was $4100 and the mixer is only $2780. If the money is worth it from the towing side of things then it might be money well spent.

go to here

http://www.lpgautogas.com.au/index.cfm?action=Savings

enter in all your details and it will tell you how long it will take to pay off your conversion based on the saving you have using lpg. also if your planning a big trip, they have a trip planner on this site that takes you along certain roads to where lpg is sold :)

edit: from a couple of quick calculations on this site, at 20,000k's per year, it will take you around 2 years to pay off the cheap on, or 3 years to pay off the more expensive one. thats not counting any government rebates.

Thanks for that. Thats a good site. Any thoughts on Injection method versas mix converter? My worry is I don't want to be under powered when I tow.

you will get more power and econ from gas injection. this is good
but more moving parts and computer controled... this is bad

the old systems had less moving parts making them more reliable but they also use a load more gas

There is also no chance of backfire with gas injection. This was pretty much the only other option for my car before I had the gas system removed. I think you will find gas injection more reliable also.

Thanks for your help. The Gas injection method is appealing in that they say there is no power loss and when towing that is important.

With Gas injection it should match performance of fuel if anything you may gain a little cause of the higher octane and depending on the tuning side of it.
Most gas injected systems are auto tuning but also allow you to overide this so you can tweak it a little if you have too.
Do a search on google for injected gas or lpg injection. Have a look at some of the sites that supply the kits. Most have installation instructions in regards to how the units are installed and tuned.
It will give you a good insight to whats involved.
You can buy the kits but they must be installed by a qualafied installer for obvious reasons.
On a side note might be worth for some of the sprintex fellas to look into as well if they want the ability to tune and save on fuel too. :)
Before anyone says it "No gas isnt for BBQ's"

I had my tj 3.5 litre put on gas last week(venturi style not gas injection) and the gas place told me i wouldnt be able to tell the difference in power loss when running on lpg and would be the same as before when switched to petrol.LIES!!!! Before and after is about 30kw loss of power on Lpg and 25kw when switched to petrol. Power loss on petrol(and gas for that matter) is due to gas mixer(venturi) before throttle body only has 63mm diameter which restricts airflow considerably. Pretty disapointed with this however the car is more economical , running 15lts per 100 on lpg (when u do the sum works out to a saving of about 35- 40% on fuel costs, it will not halve your fuel bill as most lpg installers suggest)

Thanks guys. I think the way to go is definitely the injection method for conversion. The whole power loss thing is to much of a worry. Especially when towing the caravan. If I didn't have towing to consider then the mix converter method probably would have done.
Cheers.

You should also consider if you actually have the factory modded LPG engine!

I have the venturi system on my TL wagon and it works very well. I think the loss of power is very minimal, its difficult to notice the difference between gas and petrol. I have done 63,000 kms on gas and it has not missed a beat.

I think the issue here is, whatever way you go for, get a quality installation. Mines an Impco system and was installed by LPgas1 in Lilydale, Melbourne, one of the most well known gas conversion places.

From my experience i can't see how the extra money on the injected system is worth it.

Oh and by the way, my engine is NOT factory gas compatible, but no issues so far.

Cheers!

from all the systems ive seen impco is the best.

if you want a good amount of air flow while using lpg

u need a b2 convertor
and a 225 mixer

I've recently had an Elko system installed on my TL. I had an Elko on my TE too and both run fine, not sure which type it is tho'. How do I find that out? Is it labelled someplace?

I've had the Elko injection system fitted to my TJII wagon ($4400, less $2000 rebate). We have a Jayco Eagle and will be off around Australia for 5 months next year.
