Hi all,

I have a TL VR AWD that has factor splits in the front which I am looking to replace. I am on a tight budget

I called into to JBL the other day doing some investigative work. The salesman said that I could simply replace the woofers in the door with a set of 3 ways. Now to me that does not make sense.

won’t the 3 ways only be receiving the lower frequencies? That is if the factory system has a cross over in it. which I'm sure it would.

Does it make a difference if I use a 3 way speaker as a woofer (they had some good pioneers on special for $100). Or do I need to replace the entire system. Which I think will be had to find a tweeter that sits in the factory location.

if I need to replace it all does anyone have any suggestions to a set up that will fit in the factory location and isn't going to cost a bomb

thanks

You can put any speaker you want there, but yes it will only receive lower frequencies UNLESS the factory woofer has the crossover on the speaker (not sure if its seperate or not). You're better off buying some 6" woofers to replace them rather than buying 3-ways.
*EDIT*
Sorry didn't read your post fully, if it were me i'd be buying some Jaycar splits, $120 from Megatron on these forums. Then you can just swap out the old ones with the new ones, may have to modify the tweeter mounts, but i'm sure it wouldn't be too hard.

OR you could remove the factory crossover if it is seperate and just put 3-ways in, but you'll regret it. Splits will sound much cleaner.

Im in agreeance with maddog here, splits are the better option. They jaycars for $120 are probably the best bang for buck your gonna get unless you go second hand. If your not really an audiophile or not into the audio side of things, they would have to be the best option. Otherwise a cheap set of any splits will do the job, but at least with the jaycars your gonna get a decent sound out of them.

i think the stock woofer actually receives full range, just the tweeter had a filter for the lower frequencies?

yeah thats what the sales man said. is there any way to find out for sure?

If the woofer does recieve full range, then there will be an 'in-line x-over'on the wire to the tweeter.

Is there any tricks I need to know about in removing the front door trims?

I have the mitsu workshop manual but can't find anything regarding the door trims.

I screwed up and broke my falcon speaker covers as I missed a screw and I would rather not do that again

nah magna doors are SIMPLE to take apart,

i'm sure theres a pic to help somewhere, but theres screws in:

side demister vent/duct (where the door opens)
small cap you lift out of the grab handle with a small flat-head screwdriver
inside the door handle surround

the door handle surround will slide out around the actual handle, and the rest is just clips around the edge of the door trim, these will be firm if they havent been removed before, but dont worry, its all plastic and pretty tough

i find it easier to have the window down, as the top part that sits inside the door against the window can be a little tricky, but nothing too serious

only other thing is the power window switch, just grab that and the whole trim will come off in a couple of minutes

Thw tweeters and woofers are matched in splits to the specifications of the drivers
Sensitivity, impedance, frequency response, even type of sound, so I would recommend installing a set of 2 way splits rather than just upgrading the woofer.

Whats the point in upgrading the woofer when you won't be able to listen any louder than now because the tweeter won't be able to handle it (you might get a better lower end frequency response depending on the woofer thats the only positive I can see)
but if the sensitivity is different then one will sound louder than the other (not very linear) and the other draw back is a woofer isn't designed to do high frequencies and can actually damage it at higher volumes. Unless of course you get a fullrange woofer driver (and these don't have the best bottom end because the surround is stiffer) so would defeat the purpose of even putting it in.

The jaycar tweeter is a hell of a lot larger than the original one that mitsubishi install in this car. But i'm sure there have been a few people who have installed them there so do a forum search.
I recommend installing your tweeter as close to your woofer as possible for better imaging in the front stage. any questios just pm me
