the red battery light on the right hand side of the instrument panel in a tr means dying alternator right? ill search more on this and prices on ebay, just need confirmation. btw i have two 2channel amps running off the battery, nothing super powerful but would it help/make a difference to earth it to the body of the car?

edit: by the way, just been reading some posts and the light stays on constantly instead of coming on and off.. this has been happening after stereo with sub has been running very very loud for a couple of hours while car is running. ive done a good 20-30k's since the light came on with the stereo off. i dont think past service history has anything to do with new/rebuilt alternators or anything of that sort.

The voltage regulator is more that likely worn/stuffed! Not uncommon on TR/TS Magnas or any local car which had the nasty bosch alternator with external regulator. From memory the Bosch part number was RE60, available at just about every spare parts shop, for under $40. It's a 5 minute job to fit.

replace the regulator before it damages the rest of the internals of the alternator

My alternator died a couple of weeks ago, after my regulator had gone months previously.
The regulator on the 4cyl alternator (Im assuming that's what you have, according to your profile) is internal and i was quoted $100 to get it replaced.
My advice to you is to simply go to the wreckers and get a second hand one. I picked mine up for $36 with a 30 day warranty. The warranty option is a great idea, because if the one you pick up also has its regulator gone (Common problem with these alternators), you can swap it over until you get one that works. It's alot cheaper than getting a new alternator!

p.s. its easy to DIY, all you need is a socket set and a screwdriver.
p.p.s. i have a reco alternator if you want it, $80.

Is the reco one in fine condition? Can someone elaborate on if the regulator is screwed is a replacement altenator useless?

Or can I try and replace the regulator with a new one and see if that is the problem? Bursons? prices for it ?

Or if its the altenator, whats the price range I should aim for a reco one/ new one?

Thanks in advance!

Hope that makes sense, my battery light has been comming on and off and I am 90% sure its the altenator on its way out!

i picked up a regulator for my 4cyl efi auto for $45 trade price from bursons, easy to fit. definitely worth swapping before you get new/reco alternator and see if it fixes the problem.

edit: it comes complete with the brushes and everything soldered. they WILL ask you whether you have a bosch alternator though as their bosch regulators only fit the bosch alternators. to unscrew the old one you are most likely up for undoing the headers heat shield and oil filter as they get in the way. when fitting new regulator, the brushes will be a lot longer so it might need a bit of persuasion to fit it in but dont force it too hard as its easy to damage it

Internal regulator??? Since when? Every 2nd gen Magna 4 cyl I know of had an external Bosch regulator. Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

AFAIK the voltage regulator and alternator regulator are the exact same thing.. or so bursons says as the part numbers match

i cant see why itd be $100 fitter though as the part cost $45 to purchase and its about half an hour work to pull it all out and put everything back in

mm, checking my Haynes, there is also a regulator that is an internal part.

There are 3 different altinators used on the 4cyl. ALL have the reg as part of the unit thus why it is called either internal or integrated. 2 of them have the reg on the back of the altinator so you can basically unscrew it and replace it. Only problem with this is the armiture does not get touched thus you will find the brushes will wear out a lot sooner.

The term external reg referrs to when the older cars had the regulator mounted away from the altinator ie on firewall, inner guard etc. NONE of the second gens are set up like this.

Be thankful as the Verada has 4 different altinators, 2 of which have totally different plugs as well
