hey guys
well my bf's Ks ei is displaying some really odd symptons that i have not seen in either of my verada's.

it will be driving along quite fine then all of a sudden it'll lose momentum and drop power.. the trans kicks back to compensate and eventually it'll kick back in giving the car and motor one heck of a jerk... oh yer the check engine light comes on then when the power kicks back in it goes off again.

i've been to a mechanic who has read the fault codes...
1 is air sensor ... proved that this is not the cause of this problem by replacing it with the one off of missy... still played up
2 is the throttle positioning sensor ....

any idea what this could actually be?

oh yeah and last week it had it's distributer replaced in melbourne... drove over to adelaide fine then started playing up.

thanx heaps!

my tp was doing this. and after giving the plug on the dizzy a clean with crc contact cleaner it went away. oh and the plug looked fine before i cleaned it but thought it couldn't hurt anyway(well it worked so yea). maybe a blocked injector or fuel filter possibly, also one of your leads to the spark plug might be dead?? could be a few different things. might just be a game of trial and error / ruling things out one by one.
good luck with tracing the problem:)

I'd be checking the fuel filters, lines and injectors in that situation, and the connectors for things like the AFM. If there is a TPS code being reported by the ECU too, i'd definitely be suspect of that as it does control the amount of fuel going into the engine. If it is not working, could just simply be leaning out the engine. They are pretty easy to test - just attach an analog voltmeter to it (with car on, but not started) and slowly open the throttle valve and watch the needle. If it does not move smoothly all the way up to the 5v, then the TPS is faulty and needs replacement.

Also, I'm not sure whether the veradas would have them, but there may be some temperature sensors on the cat converter, and if the cat is restricted or overheating, the ecu may be making the engine lean out to try and cool it down.

Final suggestion would be check the speed sensor too, since if there is an issue with it and it can't read the speed correctly, it cuts the fuel back on the engine as fail-safe (i've experienced this). It's an unlikely possibility, but not impossible. I just had a loose connector into the ECU that caused the problem on my magna, so could be something similar.

Good luck! :)

The symptom you're describing sounds sneakingly like a TPS (throttle position sensor) problem. The fact that it's throwing an error code is pretty much a dead give away also.

What I'd try....

Initially, try to clean your TPS terminal. Unplug it and give it a good clean out with alcohol/metho. They usually build up with gunk which could be causing it to give a bad reading to the ECU.

Secondly, you could try a pick and pull style wreckers to swap it out. They should charge you no more than $5-$10 for a second hand TPS. They are quite easy to fit yourself except you'll need a multimetre and some feeler gauges to position it right. Let us know if it gets to this stage and I can post up some more information on this for you.
