Hello Good People of AMC
Hope everyone is faring well. I've got a TJ VRX and recently the performance has been quite lazy so to speak. I have ordered all of Barry's kit and plan to get a K&N Panel filter installed as soon as the kit arrives. A couple of issues with the car
1. When its really cold or when I haven't used the car for a day, I start it up there's a ratling noise coming from the engine. It seems that something is loose. This only happens when the car is cold/hasn't been used. No problem whatsoever it's just the noise that's bothering me. Any suggestions...
2. The car seems to have lost some of its power recently. Its been service in early Feb and has since done 2.5K kms. I plan to get an Ultra-Tune tune-up. Any suggestions...
3. Lets assume that after doing all of this I have about $300 left to play with. I want to spend this money getting a bit more performance. I know that performance doesn't come cheap. What can be done with that amount?
Please feel free to post your thoughts
Cheers
Get the oil changed if it's making a rattle on start up. A lot of magna engines make the rattle but it shouldnt sound excessively nasty or last for more than a few seconds.

I had an oil change 2-3k kms ago. I use Mobil 1 full Syn. It lakes for about 30 secs - 1 min max.
thanks for your post. much appreciated.

I was thinking of doing a CAI with the $300 but i after hearing what the other guys had to say, a CAI is not worthwhile. As for the exhaust, the VRX setup is pretty good (what the members reckon) so i think the $300 is going into the savings account for the moment.

1. The rattle you speak of, when the car is cold usually ends up being the heat shielding on the stock headers...
The rattle is due to the metal being cold and very brittle, when they heat up the metal is softer and you wont hear them..
2. No idea, see a mechanic, might just be due for a good service, ie plugs, filters....
3. Add another $140ish to your $300 and you should be able to get some Pacemaker extractors fitted, which will also help with point 1. as the fitters will remove the heat shielding !

1. Probably one of the Heat shields on stock headers.
2. Good major service plus injector clean? Depends on kms...
3. $300 won't get much. Hi flow filter? cai?

Hi there I own a Mitsubishi Magna LE V6 3.5 litre. With these engines if you change the oil every 10,000km the lifters start to wear out. Its possible if you were not the first owner of the vehicle the previous owner may have changed the oil around 10,000km or more. Using the wrong sort of oil ruines the lifters and makes this rattling sound for the first minute or so during once you fire up the beast. The only alternative solution would have to be to get new lifters. I still havent changed mine and dont intend to unless they break down.
Does the sound dissapear after a minute or so?

yes it does. Thanks a lot man. Questions:
1. What are lifters.
2. How much would they cost?
Please Post

1. Correct term is lash adjuster, they sit between rocker arm and valve stem, it's possible that they just need to be serviced (cleaned) depending on kms.
2. Contact Mitsubishi service/spare parts.

My TH does this tap tap tap tap tap for about 2 minutes when it's cold. I've never heard of lifters, are they also called tappets? or is this something else to do with the valves?
Also When i first start it up it makes this horrible vacuum cleaner sound that gets louder and then suddenly stops within 5-10 seconds. I'm only concerned because i just bought this car and i want it to last me a good while.

depending on how many k's its done, i know mitsubishi are known for the lifters going... not tappets (more common to see these go on commos and stuff i believe)... lifters wont affect the engine as far as i know, just sound bad and the sound will just keep slowly getting louder

Roughly to get the lifters changed (necessary parts) will cost you most likely around $800 including labour. My Mechanic got a quote for brand new lifters around $475 for a TJ 3.5V6. That is just an estimate price so that you know how much to expect.
