Ok guys, I'm not really sure about the specifics of this cause I've only got 2 cars to go on.

My question is, is there any use to the big plastic bit under the air intake? Under my intake I had a plastic 'box' that was about 3 Liters and had a bleeding pipe from the intake. But it's not connected to anything except the intake.

My magna is a '96 TE 4cyl. My Nan's magna is an '02 TJ2 v6.

im pretty sure what ure talking about is an intake resonator...it reduces intake noise and the little tube is just to hold it still (thats if im 100% on what ure talking about)

Ok. Well its now an Ex-Intake resonator, and it hasn't changed the intake noise at all.

Is it/was it attached to your front bar? And went about 50cm back?

If yes its your stone guard, 40 bucks to replace.
Not massivley important but does protect your lower engine mechanics from... well... stones funnily enough.

No. It sits just below the intake wedge. And it's not attached to anything but the intake. My Nan's car didn't have it cause the v6 takes up a fair amount of room. But my car did. I'm fairly sure it's a 4cyl thing, but my problem with it is that it just seemed so random.

could be a drain pipe if any water gets in and pools at the bottom. Could also be a vac hose thats come loose?

It's bigger than the windscreen washer reservoir, completely black plastic (intake tunnel plastic) and sits just above the transmission. And it's not a pipe, it's a box.

This is the house that Mitsubishi built:

This one has the interesting bits marked

The three red circles surround what was used to connect it to the underside of the air intake. The blue circle contains a little piece of pipe that was connected to the intake through a hole. I have no idea what its for.

is there a part number anywhere on it? that will help identify it.

AW(?) 348-288. They are the only numbers I could find on the entire thing.

Wow, you've got a big one ! ha ha .
I had similar? on mine, but maybe only 250ml in size, ripped it off to plumb in more cold air
Have read elsewhere on here that its of no great importance, but not what its for.

b well, D.

these resonators are to smooth out the air flow after the throttle body. they provide an air buffer like a shock absorber on your suspension ie supply a constant air flow to the engine. This is one of the reason that the v6 engines run smoothly on the Mitsubishi.

i am still yet to know if taking hte intake resonator off has any positive or negative effects.

some believe that taking them off will produce a 'intake' noise, but i didnt get that.

cant feel any changes in the way my car drives, or my petrol consumption.

so i think im just gonna chuck mine back on.

i chucked mine back on today, and i have to say my car does feel a little smoother to drive.

this could be a placebo effect, but it seems to 'glide' a tad better and when i put my foot down the pick up is also a little better.

as said could be placebo, but then again why would mitsu put something on a car that is completely usless...

if anyone has any other results etc would be good to post
