View Full Version : Clicking brakes

When I start the car off, like driving out the driveway slowly and I apply the brakes the front right brake "clicks" quite loudly??
I did have a problem with the backing plate hitting off the disc on corners but a belt with hammer moved it back and fixed the problem, I don't think it's related
The brakes work great, no vibration and pull up quickly, disks in good condition and plenty of meat on the pads, but the "click" is annoying me and I think it's minor but wouldn't mind fixing it.
Any one know what is causing it???
How to fix it???

sounds like the pads are moving

try putting some nickle anti sieze on the back of the dics pads (not the side that touches the disc)

put the anti sieze on the pad where it contacts the caliper and the piston.

This is the pad loose in the caliper

Take them out, get new pads, apply some graphine grease on the edge where they contact the caliper bracket.

Get some PBR anti squeal, looks like thick orange paint, apply the the backing plate and the thin plate which goes between the pad and caliper.

This should fix your problems

BTW, how is my motor going :)

ive used this stuff (PBR anti squeal) and still had problems
also read the back of the bottle and its realy bad stuff to touch causes birth defects and linked to some cancers.

nickle anti seze is the only thing i use.

As when doing any brake work, use disposable gloves and you have no issues. Plus I do not think he is preggas at the moment lol

I have cured many a magna squeal with this stuff and have been using it for over 20 years

Hi Mal,
Motor is going as good as the night you brought it back round to my place :)
Will do the brakes at the weekend, front pads need replaced anyway.
Will give the motor a good run in a couple of weeks, coming through to Melbourne for the long weekend. Is St Kilda far from the motorway I will come off?

St. Kilda is south east of the city - so basically not far from the freeways. Just find Kingsway in the city and head out of the city, and St. Kilda road is not that far out. Obviously passes through St. Kilda area - just follow the signs ;)

The nickel stuff works, after a fashion. The basic problem is a design fault where the pad assembly has some forward/rearward movement in the front calipers. Calipers post TJII were changed and lateral springs were fitted to the caliper body to stop this - so the best solution is to scrounge some front calipers off a TJII, a TL or a TW.
