View Full Version : Swap cluster internals?

Anyone know if it is possible to swap the internals of one cluster to another, specifically the speedo/odo? There's the possibility that I might be getting custom air suspension in the future, and I saw a KR wreck with the ECS cluster, so was considering hooking into that, but want to keep my odo at the correct km's.
I assume there's probably something in place to stop such a thing, to stop people cheating with odo readings. Then again, it doesn't stop you swapping an existing cluster with another with lower readings, so maybe there isn't such a mechanism in place?
Or maybe I'm going the long way around, and it's easier to just remove the ECS part from the other cluster and add it to mine?

Provided both cars are V6 (different speedo limits (i4 = 200, v6 = 220)) then you can do it... AFAIK the second gens are somewhat stupid with regard to the whole odometer thing :)

I would buy 2 clusters, rip them both apart, and see if it works!

Provided both cars are V6Pretty sure every car with ECS (KR Xi?) was a V6?
If the suspension does go ahead it'll probably be at least a few months off, but figured I might snag the cluster while it was still available (assuming it is still there, and assuming they don't want much for it... some well-placed damage may be in order...:shifty: j/k)

It will work, I have done it to a few first gen clusters.
I don't think the 2nd gen will have some amazing electronics that are going to stop you.

The XI had the better looking cluster with the white needles and the italic numbering.
You are in my opinion better off using the XI cluster complete, for your case and early KR as the Later KR did not have ECS
YOu can do the swap but it is frigging fiddly, have done it before though. It will be obvoius to anyone who looks later as well

Actually, I personally wasn't too fond of the italics when I saw them. Maybe if I got used to them. The white needles were initialy what attracted me to the cluster, as I've got white LED lighting in mine so would suit, didn't think about utilising the ECS indicators until recently. Actually, that was one reason why I didn't get the cluster, 'cause I figured it would be a bit of a wank to have it in the cluster and not have suspension to go with it.
PS. The car did still have ECS fitted, but I checked out the bags and they looked to be on the way out. Someone has grabbed the struts since. I might look into utilising the stock solenoids etc if I can convince the wreckers that they're just some meaningless junk.

hey mate,
i have the KR Xi cluster in my TR V6 executive and it works fine, just the [prnd21] (cos i have the Manual) and the ECS lights dont work, but other then that the cluster works fine, as long as you have the V6 not the 4cly.
cheers, Nick

It's a mode for the gearbox that makes the transmission stay on one gear if you put your foot down, making you downshift manually to get some boot into it. The silvia I use has it :) Unfortunately no Magna (that i know of) has it, maybe the Sigmas or Diamantes... :(
