Hi everyone, Im new to the forum but have been reading it fot a while now and I think its great. I am after a reco engine for my TP wagon have got a quote for $1800.00 thats a reco long motor with labour just wondering if anyone knows of a better buy. It sounds expensive but im not sure. Im from Shepparton by the way and the quote was from a Shep workshop. I need one soon cos I dont want to keep using seal up forever. The block and the head have cracks all through them and I have never overheated the car once. Must of bought a dud, but I will do anything to keep it going its a really nice car to drive.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

thats too steep even repco had then for $600 off the shelf
how long did you want to keep the car
shop around
or one from the wreckers that fit them
a first gen is only worth $600 approx

I really love the car want to keep it for a long time yet and do stuff to it as I go. I paid $1700 for the car with a year rego and RWC over 2 years ago. I dont want to reco my engine as it has alot of cracks through it I really need a new one. I will shop around for a bit while my engine is still running.
Hmmm, what do you mean cracks in it?
Have you been servicing it or getting someone to service it?
Have you got a compression test done on it, this will tell you how health/unhealthy the engine is.

Yeah there is a guy I know that is a back yard mechanic that has done most of the work on it. I went to see him about my car after I thought I blew a head gasket. I took it to him and the first thing he done was pulled all the spark plugs out and the right end one had steam pouring out of it. So we thought yeah most likely the gasket has gone. So i got him to pull the head off and replace all the gaskets that needed done. Then I got a phone call from him saying that the block and head have fine cracks through them, also the head had a 1inch deep hole eaten away near the cylinder that was leaking coolant into it. So he filled the hole with liquid metal and cleaned the head and block up and replaced the gaskets.
After that the car was still running rough with steam pouring out the exhaust so he did a compression test and all cylinders were fine except the right end one. So we know that's the one leaking so he then ran Seal Up through the radiator and that has fixed it for about 4 months so I have done it 3 more times till now. So I thought its time to get a good reco engine for it and keep the old girl on the road.
Sounds interesting.
Your best bet then, might be to find a youngish engine from a wreckers and offer your mechanic friend some money to help you reco it. Or if you have plenty of money you might want to buy a reco one.
Try getting an engine from a TP etc, as I heard the heads are better than older ones.

u can pick up whole first gens for 500 bucks and under. there's even one in the for sale section but not sure on which state it's in.
$1800 is more than u paid in the first place so i wouldn't bother with that one. Im sure your local wreckers will have a running engine with less km's the the one you have now ( or atleast better nick) for between $250-500. ur nuts if u pay more than that i recon:D
the only time id pay $1800 is only if that was a full rebuild(not reconed) on your current engine.

Yeah but how will I know if an engine from a wreckers will be worth doing up. I really want one that I know will be worth doing up. I thought my car had a good engine in it but 1 year later I found out that its stuffed. The thing is they keep on driving smooth even though they could be stuffed. So I want to be really sure that the engine is worth doing up and keeping for a long time. So if I cant find one I will be happy to pay $1800.00 for a good reco one, but I will look around first for any private sales that could be worth it.

Try to get a TR or TS motor, it has a better head. It bought a TS motor a few months ago, it had good bores but I needed the bottom end. It is hard to know what a motor is really like until you strip it :)

[QUOTE=MagdagnA] I really want one that I know will be worth doing up. QUOTE]
want to freight down a block and do it up your self or not
I have 2 blocks 2.6 astrons in brisbane
both are standard and need rings and bearings timing chains and seals
You can normally tell a good engine at a wreckers, found one not long ago.
Was a 2.6 astron in a sigma.
130,000kms on it, manual, one of those big sun visor things on the front windscreen (granny car), granny seat covers and steering wheel cover etc etc.
Car had rear end damage, engine bay was shiney as, I was seriously going to steal it for myself but it was gone the next week.
Could be as easy as that.
Have a look around at some wreckers, see if you can find some gold.

:stoopid: was gonna post that yesterday but didn't. Now if you scroll to the bottom it states $500 tn-tp engine with 3 month warranty. so if your prepaid to shell out $1800 for a reoned not rebuilt then you could get almost 4 of these fitted:D for the same money and im sure one would have to be good enough to last a while.

Try Magna Brunswick 93840401 and tell em I told ya to call. They ain't the cheapest in Melbourne but they are good with 1st Gens.
One thing you MUST Do when you get the engine in from where ever you get it from is Change the OIL every 5000 Kms or so WITHOUT fail. A rec'd 2.6 is a tight little thing and they end up with metal shavings in the Oil so changing the oil is a must.

Thanks guys for the help I will enquire about those offers tomorrow. It would be better to buy one at $500.00 then rebuild it cos then I can get better parts fitted not just standard ones. If I went a reco engine $1800 is alot when all they have done is put stock parts where needed. I would rather spend my money on a complete rebuild so I know whats done to it.
Thanks again :)

The TR/TS motors are better than the first gen ones, but you won't be able to use the second gen intake manifold on the first gen frame as it physically doesn't fit unfortunately...
