Hi Everyone
Just wondering if someone can tell me if there are different versions of the 3 plug TCU for a 4cyl TR.
I only ask as I am dealing with a Magna wrecker here in SA and they want to know what 3 plug version I have. I dont want to buy the part and then realise it is not the correct one as they won't take it back.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Kate

As far as I know all TCUs for the 2nd Gen were one single plug? Unless it's the ECU that you're after?

stagma mentioned to me the other day that there were 2 different versions of it. One supposably has a more "refined" shift pattern on it, and is generally much harder to find than the generic one...

There are 4 TCU's for the second gen
2 of them have 2 plug
2 of them have 3 plugs
The amount of plugs has nothing to do with shift pattern, it is the type of trans used
the main difference, aside from the number of plugs is the shift pattern is a little better for the 4cyl than the 6 as the 6 has more torque thus can change sooner
you can use either 4 or 6cyl units as long as the plugs match

So I guess Im gonna have to get someone to pull it out and see exactly which one it is?

I had this problem with my TR the TCU is behind the cd/tape player watever you have, just take that out and you can see the TCU there shud be a product code on it '2 .... something' from memory i think, just get that number and find a wrecker with a TCU same model as that, change it over and your done.

forget the model number, just get a 2 or 3 plug depending what you want
remove the panel under the console on the lhs, you will see tucked right under the heater and will see the plugs there.
I should be able to get either no worries, around 50 plus postage tested

OK thanks for that info. I was a little confused as the wrecker said I needed to make sure I had the right version of 3 plug. I know I def need a 3 plug, I was told originally that I needed a 2 plug but on closer inspection, it was discovered it was actually a 3 plug and not a 2 plug that was already in there
Thanks again

I have been looking for a 3 plug TCU for a TR Magna and all my local wreckers want 200 for them. IF you have one spare for a 4 cylinder, although your saying it doesnt matter if it is for a V6, would you be willing to sell one to me?

OK so today Ive been quoted $200 for a tested TCU from a Hotline 40 wrecker. Does that sound like a reasonable price?
if so I am gonna get it as I cant drive anywhere where the speed limit is over 70km/h now.
Thanks

Yep and ebay. It seems 3 plugs a little harder to get than 2 plugs. Ive been after one for several weeks now
expect to pay up to $300 for a second hand unit a new one is aprox $1200
i would try to find one with the same numbers as i tryed to use one with different numbers and it wouldnt change gears.

When the TCU in my old KS died, it was replaced with a new one by Agostino Elisabeth
for $500.00

The minor difference in shift pattern is almost not noticable. YOu are better off with the 4cyl in the v6 as it gives slightly longer shifts and will tend to kick back at slightly higher revs as well

the auto computer was removed from a running car and placed in to a car with a burnt auto computer . it had different numbers. the car stayed in 1 gear.
i got the computer with the right numbers put it in and the gears changed fine
i also put the computer that i tryed the 1st time back in to the running car and it changed gears fine.
i wouldnt risk buying a $200+ computer + post with the wrong numbers to find its not going to work.

You dont happen to have any 3 plugs available yet do you??
They are proving to be quite elusive in Adelaide. The wrecker who had one for $200 wanted me to pull the faulty one out and check the numbers....is that really necessary to do?
Cheers
