ok this may prove to be the most stupidest question ever to appear on any forum board..
i was thinking last night (for a change) about them sportsmatic gear boxes, you know them normal auto shifters but ya push the gear stick to the side and use it like a manual by pushing the gear stick up or down (all without a clutch)
now what im curious about is it possible to have a transmission like that in a TR? im guessing id have alot of work to do and would cost the entire yearly wage of a medium size nation to do it but what does everyone think?
could it be done?

Anything can be done mate, although as you said it would take you a year to save up, im tipping it would be no cheaper than 6k lol
dont waste your time mate, just go with a manual conversion much more reliable and easier than installing a tippy.

thanks mate i tend to agree with ya. IF i did go with the tippy it wont be for a long time yet im just more curious at this stage to hear what more experianced people then me think of a conversion like that

I was investigating this in my TR.
In theory it shouldn't be too hard, you would need to create an electronic switch which would trick the transmission into being in a particular gear when in D, this is the hardest part. The rest is just wiring and then making up the tiptronic plate (Which you could probably steal from a 3rd gen).

Are you talking about turning your existing tranmission into something that has some form of manual gear selection override (apart from the 1,2,3,D setup you already have)? or are you talking about transplanting some other form of automatic transmission with "sports mode" into your car??
If you are thinking of doing the former, why??
It will still be a 4 speed auto. 4spd tippy is a very poor subsitute for a manual. Ask 95% of late model auto drivers and they will tell you they hardly ever use it. The only thing that would make it remotely entertaining would be to rig up switches (al la MADDOGS suggestion), mounted on the steering wheel. Then you could pretend you are driving a porsche.

Like the Lancer VRX's hehe we have 4spd trippy in our Lancer and we have the choice of changing gears on the steering wheel or as per normal in the middle console it's pretty sweet

fair enough then but if you want too change gears yourself in a 2nd gen it would be alot easier in a manual by the looks

For all the money, fabrication, wiring, and hassles, i think you'd be dissapointed with the result in the end.
Thats just my theory sorta thing.
Your TR a V6 or 4?
