Hey guys, my car started cutting out when going around corners so i thought i needed some fuel. Put in $30 worth and it was fine. Drove around today and it started doing it again then it just started randomly cutting out and eventually just would not start at all.
I let the car cool down, tried starting it heaps of times but would just not run. I eventually called a tow truck and got it home. Tried to start it and it again nothing. Tried it the second time, started up fine.
Tow guy said its probably the fuel pump. Anyone know how to replace the fuel pump ?

also recheck fuel relay is working
you should hear a click on the passenger side when you turn the ignition before starting
if EFI the fuel pressure regulator at the end of the rail may be faulty
for sedan fuel pump to remove make sure the tank is below half
ramps or jack up back of the car and car stands
largest round part attached to the tank with screws electrical wires and sender is the fuel pump
undo the screws and refit another fuel pump from a wrecker new ones are too expensive
page 3 and down a bit in this link

Maybe you should go through a checklist to make sure it is the pump, it could be something else :)

ok thanks. What do you mean by below half ? below half empty ?
I only have maybe $30 worth in there atm.

Well, it's a 70l tank, so you should be fine - just be aware that, when you raise the rear of the vehicle (which you're gonna need to do to get to the appropriate spot to work), the fuel's gonna tip toward to hole you're about to open ;-)
If you have a clean container, etc, into which you could save the fuel (or don't mind wasting a little), there's a drain plug you could use to remove another ~10l or so to be on the safe side. Otherwise, you may wear a few litres while under the vehicle - that probably will not wind up a pleasant experience...
Cheers,
Mattt.

that so called drain plug actually holds the pump too (efi only)

Ahh - fairy nuff... I have a non-EFI TM here from which I drained the fuel using the plug (looks rather like the sump drain plug on the engine), and an EFI TP - can't say I've positively seen the plug on the TP (having never needed to play with it)...
Cheers,
Mattt.
my original fuel tank for my car (leaded TM tank) didn't have it.
the donor TN elite that i pinched the fuel tank from had it, and its a support for the bottom of the EFI fuel pump.
i put in an electric pump (leaded TM has a mechanical pump), but had to somehow block it up (used a nut on the inside of the tank). carby electric pumps dont actually need it.
but yes, fuel leaks out of it... so collect it up and use it for cleaning tools, parts, etc (well thats what i use it for)

Just want to see what you guys think, i can get the car started and when it does it idles fine but the SLIGHTEST push on the accelerator causes it to stall. If i dont push on the accelerator it eventually stalls.
Do you think it still could be the fuel pump ?
It's definatly sounding like it, for there isn't any fuel when you rev it. It could also be the relay.

Ok thanks for that. When i start the car it it does a clicking sound on the passanger side under the dash so im guessing that its working fine.

Sounds like the float level might not be correct in the fuel bowl.
The best way to check is to make sure you have fuel pressure when it is cornering. If fuel pressure drops then it is pickup related. If fuel pressure stays up, then the float level needs adjusting.

I cant seem to find the pump could someone take a pic of it please ?

in the fuel tank. theres a plate on the back of the fuel tank with a few screws. undo then and pull it out of the tank. the rear axle sometimes gets in the way, but it's possible to do.

EFI lol, my bad.
Check the fuel pressure before you go hunting down electrical problems!
You said that it only does it when less than half a tank yeah? It does sound to me like a fuel surge problem in the tank.

Umm.. i found out what the problem was. I actually umm... it was errr... I ran out of umm...petrol.
I must have been sleep driving or something because i just cant see how $30 worth of fuel just went like that
Still doesnt explain how it would start up and idle though. Must have been just running off fumes!
Thanks for all that helped me out i feel like a retard now. Anyone want to buy this spare fuel pump i now have ?
In the words of my own mother " sometimes you are very smart but something you are very stupid"

haha now that just made my day:badgrin:
bet you won't do it again in a hurry.
$30 worth of petrol right now might just give you enough to get to the end of the street...
