View Full Version : How hot do brake disks get?

Changed the front pads yesterday, brakes work great, but thought there was a bit of dragging and found I couldn't touch the disks they were so hot, only noticed it by accident
Came home from work and tried again and they were too hot to touch, checked the rears and they were also hot but not as much as the front.
I've never actually touched them before so have nothing to compare them to, thing is I was coming home in heavy traffic, braking was just a slowing down, not heavy.
What do you reckon, do you think the pistons have seized up and are not releasing properly??

not sure how hot the would be
but it would be a decent amount
depending on speed there would be quite afew rotations when slowing down causing the metal to heat up pretty quick
its a normal thing which you shouldnt be worried about
but, if you break really hard to stop at the lights use the hand brake instead of the brake pedal (when stationary) to advoid the disk from warping by keeping the heat in one spot

Ive had mine glowing orange before. Followed by some flames.lol But they werent they right pads for my sprited drives.
Not sure of an exact tempreture, but somewhere around 500c. Give or take a bit.

Well DBA 4000 rotors come with 3 strips of heat-sensitive pain, each strip changes colour when a specific temperature is reached, they go 450, 500, 550 degrees C from memory.
After my last track outing at wakefield, all 3 strips including the 550 degrees had been triggered.
I doubt you would get anywhere near that on the street though, even fanging it around like a hoon.

Standard pads are rated at 350 degrees from memory..:)

Ever seen them glowing through the rims on race cars?
About *that* hot. ;-)
Cheers,
Mattt.

Hmmm.......so you reckon the heat was normal even though I was driving in heavy traffic.
Like I said i've never actually felt them before was just surprised they were so hot with stop start driving in heavy traffic

I've had mine glowing orange before too. the brake pads didn't last for more than a week after that though lol

when you say rated? do you mean thats the temperature when the breaks fail? i was late for work one day so breaking hard at the corners, and on the last corner before i got to work they pratically didnt work, and scared the crap out of me as they were working on the previous corner with expected fade. i want to make a simple system with, a thermo sensor and a warning light on the dash to indicate imminent brake failure.1

That's actually fade-out, where you use the brakes so much that they don't provide the same stopping power. It happens consistently when you thrash your car a bit. There was a link to how many stops a Magna can do before the brakes fade out completely. From memory it was like 3 hard stops at above 60km/h.

yeah i could feel them fading, and getting progressivly worse, but on the last corner they pratically didnt work at all!, i was expecting them to be worse than the last corner, but not allmost no stopping power. so i wanted to know at what temperature which this happens, is there a threshold point? or just fade at exponential rate relative to heat., would be nice to know when to back off before it reaches this dangerous point.

It's more of a function of heat rather than temperature. The surfaces will get extremely hot after one stop but they won't be soaked with heat.

 Hot enuff to light a smoke off... Just ask the tassie crew on how hot my brakes get and still have full stopping power:badgrin:

yup, it's all about the threshold, once a pad is beyond its effective temperate range, it simply doesn't work well, and will wear out at an incredibly rate.
Having switched to DS2500 from EBC Greens, the Greens bite much harder around town, but the Ferodos never seem to fade, and bite much harder at high speeds on the track once they are warm.
The greens would start fading after 1-2 hard laps (but not compltely go), with the Ferodos my street tyres were overheating and running out of grip before the pads started to fade significantly.
And oh, the Greens were badly cracked and had to thrown out afterwards.

Hehe! Same.. well.. i don't think i had any flames! Didn't have enough time to looK!
I had been doing some drags(on private property) with some mates and on one of the runs i did i decided to jump on the brakes as hard as i could without ABSing it at about 160km/h. Pulled up next to my mates and quickly had one saying. GO GO GO GO! your brakes are glowing red man! So i took off to let them cool.

stop start traffic would be the worst on brakes wouldnt it? the constant braking on the disc...sure its not high speed braking, but ur still putting pad to disc alot, and u may have been riding ur brakes a bit as well in traffic like that.
so no doubt nothing to worry about with it. if they still had the same bite in ur driveway as they did wen u took off from work/wherever, then its just normal, dont stress lol

yes it is normal that your brake rotors would be too hot to touch immediately after driving the car......
(can't believe I just typed that)
