View Full Version : Strange sound when turning right - anything to worry about?

Hi All
In the last few days Ive noticed that whenever I turn right there is a weird rattle/grindy noise that sounds like it is coming from the rear LEFT hand side of my TR.
Ive checked the power steering fluid as that was the first thought that sprung to mind and all is fine there. My man thinks it is a loose bolt rattling around but I am not so sure. It isnt the most pleasant of sounds. It is much worse when I turn a sharp right hand corner. Sometimes I dont hear it at all if it is a reasonably gentle turn but it is becoming a little more frequent now
Can anyone relate to this?? Any ideas of what i should be checking out?
Thanks
Kate

Do you notice it when you go over a really bumpy surface?

Without being able to hear the noise it's hard.
Look for a small rock between the brake disc and the disk cover tinny thing. - that makes a horrible sound.
Or maybe it's your CV joints? (usually a clunking/clicking sound)
Take it to a tyre/front end place or your mechanics - that's what I'd do.
I'm just guessing :doubt:

Hmmm comming from the opposite rear side from the turn sounds like a bearing loading up.
You may have a wheel bearing on the way out.
It may also be a suspension component being worn enuff to allow a tyre to rub.
Without hearing it, like Puck says, its hard to tell.
Get ya other half to take it for one of those Pedders checks, theyre less than $30.
I say your other half as my experience with these people is that they see a female and just start bull****ting immediatly $$$$$$$
When you get it checked take it to someone else to confirm what they said BEFORE parting with any cash.

Thanks for that, I'll add it to the list of things that need fixing on my Magna. LOL

Check that the LH Caliper bolts have not come loose. I had a front caliper come loose, and made noise, but mainly when reversing.

Yeah got it booked into Pedders tomorrow. Just for a check, I think it is going to be pricey though as it seems to be getting worse and my steering is all over the place, the car is basically steering itself now
I will let you know what they quote me!

Errrr ...... ya steering is in the front
I hope ya rear axle aint wanderin around from a broken lateral rod mount.
Its a big bar that goes from the back left hand side of the axle up to the subframe on the right.
If you download the TR manual from here http://www.lisho.net/?page_id=3 its on page 34 - 2 - 3

The noise still sounds like it is coming from the rear (kinda a rumbling sound) but yes the steering is very wobbly now. I am expecting Pedders to tell me it is gonna be megabucks to fix esp as I am female. I am going to take my Dad in there though too just in case ... and I certainly wont be getting anything done until I know i have been quoted a fair price

Well they couldnt work out what the rumbling noise was, said they checked everything and could not find out the cause. it is slowly getting worse but i was assured it was safe enough to drive.
The rest of it is going to cost around $450-$500 for new lower bushes, left rear CV joint and LH rack boot.
Dont know what I am going to do yet ... it is one thing after another with my poor car. Its been so good until the last few months when everything is going wrong
Oh and Pedders werent too bad, they didnt pressure me to get the work done and try and book me in for it straight away. I did feel like a bit of a cheapskate though paying my $14 and saying thanks very much.
Thanks for all your replies

Perhaps take it somewhere else. They dont know what the noise is but they assure you its safe to drive.....wtf?
Even better, go wrap it around a pole then say the noise came back and you lost control, then tell em that Pedders said the car was fine to drive like that.
My guess - $14 inspection = 5 minute look over the car.

You get what you pay for...and $14 isn't much to pay, so what do you think you'll get for that?
Ask around and find a mechanic that most people agree is reputable, and get it looked at PROPERLY. Obviously something is wrong, and any half decent mechanic should be able to find it and fix it. Expect to pay an appropriate amount of money for it, but look at it as an investment in your safety rather than an expense for the car - would you rather save a few bucks taking the cheap way out and wind up dead or injured because of it?
As far as bushes go, that's a favourite for dodgy mechanics to sell you on when nothing is actually wrong. I once had a dodgy one tell me that it was critical that front suspension/steering bushes were replaced as they only had 3 months life left in them and could cause critical problems if they failed...3 years and 40,000km later I finally got around to replacing them myself (with a mechanic friend helping), and had no problems at all in the interim, despite some pretty punishing treatment for the car in the interim. Second and third opinions may cost a bit more, but they're certainly worth it to make sure that you get the job done right, and only pay for what you really need.

yep, amen to that mate...sent my car for roadworthy testing bout amonth back, and the mechanic said that she needed Front rear control arm mount bushes, sway bar bushes, rack boots and CV boots.
When me and dad replaced them, he was a bit surprised..the words that came out of his mouth "this guy was crazy, i ould take these are'nt wrecked at all!"...I stood on one to test it, MINIMAL flex, bascially exactly the same as the new ones!
the shocking truth im afraid...hahaha

Well I took it to Pedders as that what you guys suggested I do.
They told me they could not work out what the noise was as it is so intermittent. This is true, it only happens maybe every 3rd or 4th turn. It has also been taken to a mechanic in the last few weeks who also could not help me and did not know what the problem was. The RAA also had no clues and they also suggested I go to Pedders as they were the specialists in the this sort of thing
I dont think I can afford to spend any more money on the car, as it is now, it needs a new TCU and I can only drive it around my local area to the shops etc. As I have a young daughter (11 mths old), safety is the most important thing now.
I just need to convince my Man to let me get a new car ... in the mean time I'll keep praying that my lotto numbers come up
