Re: 1999 TH 3.5L with 220000km on the dial.
I've huffed and I've puffed and used language my mum would hate, but can't unstick the crankshaft bolt so I can change my cam belt and badly leaking cam seals.
I've read that using a bar wedged on the floor and the starter on the car can break the bolts grip but this sounds like a dodgy solution.
Question: what are the chances of a) breaking the bolt, b) breaking the engine?
I should add I've tried a big-**** rattle gun on a large compressor until the oil on the bolt from the leaks started to smoke with the heat.
Last question there are 3 seals in the kit I bought, there are one each for the cams, is the 3rd for crankshaft?
Thanks guys & Gals,

remove the sump hold the crank with a bar between the block and the largest counter weight
then undo the pully bolt
undo one of the fly wheel nuts use a different bolt and a metal brace bolted to the block to lock the drive train
a larger compressor and a 3/4 socket drive and rattle gun
remember the pajeros did have
a series of timing pullys bolts break in the cranks during the 1999 era

I had similar problems with my 3.0 L 6G72.
On this forum I was advised to use the method of resting the socket bar on a front suspension member and using the starter motor.
I tried it having first removed the spark plugs.
One quick turn of the ignition key was all that was needed. It was undone.
I'm convinced.

I came across this when my friends crankahaft pulley fell apart in the middle of a busy carpark. Haven't worked on a 3.5l to know the orientation. but what i did was take out the starter motor then grabbed the biggest screw driver and wedged it between the teeh of the flywheel and the gearbox casing. while i was holding it my mate undid the crankshaft bolt. Just make sure you re-torqure it back to the propper setting and not too tight.

Thanks for all the feedback, am off to see a mechanic who claims to have the rattle gun from hell to try that, otherwise it looks like time to use the motor idea, either that or throw the engine away.... (Which would be a shame as it is going better than ever at 200,000K), just can't hold its oil)
P.S. tried the remove the sump idea, the lower housing is only an oil collector, it would be a big job to in-car access the crankshaft from what I saw.

Nothing wrong with using the starter, its common practice. Just make sure the bar is hard up against something before you crank, or it will swing around and possible fall off or damage the bolt.

Yes, I had no trouble using the starter as above.
No, Buffy there are no holes in the side of my shed. I did it in the carport!!!!!

So its buried in the next door neighbours cat then?
i had this prob on my engine but it wasnt in the car so couldnt use starter motor theory.
my mate bought over this long pole with a socket on one end(weird attachment), then used a hammer to hit it from the top and it come un-done.

Better be careful then, my cat beside the Magna is a Jaguar XJ-S!

I never believed the bar on the crankpulley until I struck a crank-bolt I couldn't undo, normally in a manual you can just put it into gear, but on my R32 that did not work, something like 300lbs torque on the bolt - seemed to be a bit excessive.
Ended up following my dodgy brother's advice and using a bar and socket and setting it up with the bar locked locked against subframe and a quick flick with the starter and it was loose - easy as. Just make sure you know which way it will turn first and then set bar up so it cannot move.

Well the rattle gun from hell didn't do it, it took a 3.5L V6 Spanner - yes that's right the mechanic put a socket on the end of a bar - rested it against the front suspension and "tweeked" the starter, took 3 goes but it finally came undone. YAY!
Thanks Geoff - I can recommend Repco service center Southport!

No! actually a very clean and tidy shed, either the professionals have the knack or very good hole filling ability.....
Anyway the cam belt and seals are DOne DOne DONE!!!!
&*^&*ing hell that is POOR design for something that gets changed semi-often
Had a merry time getting the old seals out and getting the tensioner to take up the slack and rotate cam and crank back to their marks was a puzzle for awhile.
So hopefully the Exxon Valdez is now plugged and I can stop buying shares in Castrol.
Hang on my Jag XJ-S still leaks.......... Sigh
