Hey all,
I've been wondering for a while why my TN has been takin corners just a tad bit, ahh, weird. Let me explain what I mean: say I take a corner with the steering wheel at 1/4 lock, all of a sudden the damn thing takes the corner sharper, as if i've yanked the wheel to full lock, with no change on the steering wheel. Damn scary along the highway through sweeping bends when it jerks off to the side.
I thought it might be the suspension, so I wacked GT Gas struts on the front. (The old struts had a date earlier than the compliance plate, and the turning capability through back streets at moderate speed was a massive improvement) No Change to the symptoms, though. Then I thought maybe my alignment, so I got that done, but it got worse. Like i'd hold the wheel straight for 500 meters, and then all of a sudden it would veer off to the left or right with no movement of the steering wheel.
Then the front wheel started grinding, so I thought i'd better have a look underneath.
Would yas believe the nut holding the hub/steering knuckle to the control arm had come off! MY GOD! There was practically nothing holding in the bottom of the right front wheel assembly except pure luck! The control arm was grinding against the disc, the thing had moved that much, with a fair noticable gouge (I only replaced the discs 4 months ago!) The dicks that did the wheel alignment didn't even notice! I even asked the dude "Is there anything wrong with the front end that might kill me," and he said nothing was wrong at all, just ya CVs need doing, but not yet 'cause they're kinda OK, and the boots are stuffed (which I knew anyway)
So I'd like to know if this is a common fault. Ford Falcons have split pins to hold the nuts in place. This thing doesn't. Thats crazy. I coulda had a bad day indeed if the front wheel hub, knuckle, disc and all came off! And i can't figure out why it didn't come off, except the fact that I woulda won lotto today if i'd entered, thats how lucky I am.
Safe driving ppl,
