View Full Version : Sticking throttle

I have a TL VRX, lately it has had an intermittent problem with the throttle sticking.

It occurs during daily driving. After I pull up in traffic, I ease on the pedal and nothing happens for the first inch then it feels like something which has caught gets past the obstruction and the car accelerates. If I keep the pedal pressed past the catch point all is OK. It can sometimes be “cured” by blipping the pedal a few times other times the problem just disappears.

I have eyeballed from the pedal to the intake and I can’t see anything wrong.

Any ideas?

What does it feel like when it's sticking? Is the pedal hard to press to get it going again?

It feels normal until it gets to the sticking point but there is zero response from the motor, keep pressing and it feels like a click. The response feels like I've gone from closed to half open throttle.

It sounds like it may be a problem with your throttle body or pedal pivot.... That's about all I can think of... If you can disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle body, test each one to see if it's sticking.

had a similar thing in my old car, i think a throttle body clean (and sometimes a plenum clean) is the recommended thing... felt like a friction point halfway thru the pedal, which was an absolute pain in the ass during peak hour traffic! unfortunately on that car the tb clean didnt fix it much :(

Shouldnt this still be under warranty from Mitsu? If so, get em to check her out.

I think it is most likely to be gunk on the edge of the butterfly and/or on the throttle body around it. Spray trottle body cleaner on it or give the butterfly valve a clean and then see how it goes. Fixed mine where it was sticky getting off-idle. :D

Also check how much freeplay you have in your accelerator cable - if you have too much you will get a lot of foot movement before the throttle valve starts to open.

Had same prob last December Kl GTVi.

Turned out throttle cable was loose and binding in the tube going through the firewall .

Loosened two adjustng bolts on Plenum bracket where cable appears in engine bay and slid the bracket across a few mm to tighten cable.

Problem disapeared

Cheers

I have the same problem with my TL LS but it only seems to happen after a bout of somewhat 'spirited' acceleration. Will try mike's remedy tomorrow:

I think Scorpion is right on the mark - sounds like the butterfly is jamming in the throttle body. This is usually caused by gunk or when the throttle stop screw wears a little and lets the butterfly return too much. The stop screw can be screwed in JUST A LITTLE to stop the butterfly jamming.

The simple way to check is disconnect your throttle cable from the throttle body and see if the cable is sticking as you push the pedal. If this is nice and smooth then turn the throttle by hand and see if the butterfly is jamming . . I believe you will find it will be one of the two.
(This same thing happened to my wife's Honda Odyssey and she mentioned it to the Honda service department each time it went in for a service for the last 4 years!! . . it never got fixed and only got worse. Last time in for a service I drew a diagram of the butterfly/throttle body for them . . . problem fixed@@#%$#@)

Be carfeul with that throttle stop screw you may introduce another problem. Hence TPS may need re adjusting afterwards. (May cause surging etc) The one im talking about is on the throttle body.
As mentioned previously try adjusting the accelerator cable instead see if that helps.

mine used to jam open at full throttle.. that was fun trying to pull that one up after hammering it..
the t/b spring itself was bent and catching.. dropped it off to rpw, they fixed it and highflowed it for me
