View Full Version : Fuel tank prob
I got crap in my fuel tank coming up causing problems, atm I'm using carbie cleaner with my fuel to try help it but its taking too long. I'm just wondering how hard it would be to remove the fuel tank on my TR and clean it out. And how would I go about doing it all?

yea now thats a good idea. so where do you think the metho and crap would go after that:nuts: pm old fart for the pages out of the manual u need to drain and remove the tank. also drain the fuel lines while your at it. And put a fresh fuel filter in after u have done all that.
I got the same problem i think, also, i can only get 40 litres into each tank before red light comes on

You only need to put a little bit of metho in the tank if there is an issue with water content in the fuel, as metho actually dissolves the water. If you seriously have that much crap getting sucked up into the fuel system, I'd suspect that the in-tank fuel filter may actually be split or something, allowing all the heavy particles to travel all the way to the fuel filter, which isn't designed to clean out such large stuff.
Can't help with the tank removal much as I have a TP, but generally it's fairly straight-forward process removing the tank. Depressurise the fuel line first and make sure the tank is fairly empty. Disconnect all the wiring and hoses, remove the braces holding it in place and it should just come out. Cleaning I'd either use fresh fuel or metho for that process, making sure the fuel pump and sender unit have been removed before you start. Replace the filter on the pump too while you're at it.

To wash it out I would first fill it up with soapy hot water, shake, then empty, keep going to the water comes out clear, then give it a few good rince out's.
Then a splash of metho to pick up any left over water then let that dry out then a few liters of petrol a good shake and a final drain before fitting it again.
Either that or just buy a new tank.

I did the tank on my falcon.
I took it out and put about 2 litres of metho in. It dissolved all the goo and crap no worries.
I actually stuck my hand in through the hole for the pump and gave it a good going over.
I actually experimented with a number of different solvents and the only one that worked/did anything was metho.
The full factory manual for the TR can be downloaded here http://www.lisho.net/?page_id=3
If you really think you have dirty fuel problems whip out the tank and clean it (mark the hoses by putting a cable tie on both the hose and fitting of one so you know which is which later), check and clean the filter in the tank and replace the fuel filter in the engine bay.
Once its back together put in some PULP and injector clean and go for a drive.
It should take ya about 4 hours all up as an amatuer mmkay
Gimme a yell if ya need anything else.:)
